SUBJECT: Award of Contract – Community Center Kiln Room Addition (PR 99/01-00)
REPORT IN BRIEF
On August 18, 1999, the City opened bids for the City of Sunnyvale Community Center Kiln Room Addition project, PR 99/01-00. There were five bids received. Staff is recommending award of the contract for this project to the lowest responsible bidder, ICC General Contractors Inc., for the lump sum amount of $67,485.00.
BACKGROUND
There was a fire in the existing kiln room in May, 1998 which destroyed a gas kiln and a sizable portion of the roof. The investigation of the fire revealed the cause to be heat accumulation due to the excessive number of kilns in the confined area. It was, therefore, decided to move the two Gas kilns out of the existing space and into the new addition next to the existing kiln room. This project will add 421 square feet area to the kiln room.
DISCUSSION
The scope of this project is to provide a separate space for the two gas kilns by building a concrete block structure of about 421 square feet. The contract also includes landscaping, and providing of access to the new and existing kiln room.
For comparative purposes, the Engineer’s Estimate and the bids received are:

Staff has determined that the bid from ICC General Contractors Inc. is the lowest responsible bid. It is, therefore, recommended that the contract be awarded to ICC general Contractors Inc.
A determination was made that this project will have no significant effect on the environment in accordance with CEQA guidelines for categorically exempt projects.

RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council award the contract for subject project to the lowest responsible bidder, ICC General Contractors Inc. for the total lump sum of $67,485, and approve a construction contingency of $10,000.
