Approval is requested for the award of a contract to Altruistic Pool Construction of Hayward for swimming pool repair/reconstruction for the Department of Public Works.

The last major repair work at the Sunnyvale and Columbia Middle School Pools was in 1986, when an Invitation for Bids was issued for replastering Sunnyvale, plaster patching at Columbia, and tile patching at both sites. Both pools are now in need of more extensive repair.

Bid specifications were prepared by Public Works and Purchasing staff, and Invitation for Bids #F9911-43 was made available to twelve Bay Area pool construction companies. Two bids were received:

The engineer’s estimate for pool repairs was $50,000 per pool for a total of $100,000.

After review of submittals and reference information, staff recommends award of contract to the low bidder.

Total cost to the City will be $116,950 in repair costs plus a $10,000 contingency requested by the Public Works Department for a total amount not to exceed $126,950. Funds are available in Capital Project #820040.

It is recommended that Council award a contract in an amount not to exceed $126,950 to Altruistic Pool Construction of Hayward for the repair/reconstruction of Sunnyvale Middle School Pool and Columbia School Pool for the Department of Public Works and authorize the Purchasing Officer to prepare and issue a contract to that effect.
