RTC #00-029

January 25, 2000

SUBJECT: Y2K Update – Information Only Report

REPORT IN BRIEF

This report presents information on the results of the Year 2000 Preparedness Program for the City of Sunnyvale.

BACKGROUND

On November 9, 1999, the Information Technology Department presented a status report on the City’s Y2K 2000 readiness to the City Council. During the Public Hearing, a resident requested that the Information Technology Department present the Y2K impact on the City.

DISCUSSION

Like the rest of the world, the City of Sunnyvale welcomed in the New Year with far more celebrations than disruptions. There was no need to activate Emergency Management Operations (EMO) throughout the duration of the evening. The Information Technology Department reported no significant Y2K disruptions experienced by City of Sunnyvale computer systems. All identified critical computing systems, external hardware and software interfaces were reported as operational. The Public Works Department reported that the water distribution system and processing plant were operating as normal. The Finance Department was able to process the utility billing and payroll as scheduled with no apparent data loss or manipulation.

The City experienced no disruption of service from its most critical vendors such as PG&E, Pacific Bell, Cellular One, and Motorola. There were no reports of loss of power or communication.

Public Safety had additional staffing for New Year’s Eve including civilian managers; however, most staff was relieved from their posts by 1:00 a.m. No major disturbances were reported.

The community outreach program that the City implemented was effective. Public Safety’s effort to educate the public on individual preparedness as well as ITD’s communication about the City’s preparedness for the Y2K seemed to address public concerns. The number of concerned callers to the City throughout the year actually diminished as the date approached.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no additional fiscal impact for the City’s Y2K program. Any costs associated with replacement or compliance for critical systems were absorbed through the City’s replacement schedules or within existing operating budgets.

PUBLIC CONTACT
