SUBJECT: AMENDMENT TO TITLE OF CLASSIFICATION ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/CITY ENGINEER AND MODIFICATION OF JOB CLASSIFICATION

REPORT IN BRIEF

This report recommends amending the classification of Assistant Director of Public Works/City Engineer to change the title to "Assistant Director of Public Works" and modifying the description of job duties and qualifications. No change to the salary is recommended.

DISCUSSION

The recommended change in the class title and job specification allows the Department of Public Works to consider possession of a certificate to practice as a Registered Civil Engineer as highly desirable, rather than a minimum requirement. This change meets the needs of the Department because it provides more flexibility in the recruitment and selection of candidates and in the assignment of duties.

The requirement to possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering, planning, public administration or a related field in addition to significant public works management experience for the position of Assistant Director of Public Works remains unchanged.

The Public Works Director will continue to serve as the City Engineer, per the existing Public Works Director job specification.

FISCAL IMPACT

Since the proposed classification replaces an existing classification at the same pay range, there will be no fiscal impact to the City.

Public contact was made through posting of the Council agenda on the City’s official notice bulletin board, posting of the agenda and report on the City’s web page, and the availability of the report in the Library and the City Clerk’s Office.

RECOMMENDATION

  1. Adopt Alternative 1; approve classification title change and modifications to the description of job duties and qualifications.
