Apply For and Accept Wal-Mart Foundation Grant for Children's Books |

REPORT IN BRIEF |
|
This report is a request to apply for and to expend funds awarded by the Wal-Mart Foundation. Sunnyvale Public Library's proposal has been approved with an award in the amount of $1,000 for "Easy Reader" books for the Children's materials collection. |

BACKGROUND |
|
Wal-Mart Foundation has offered small monetary grants to benefit diverse local communities. These grants are made to meet the needs of specific populations in the community. |

EXISTING POLICY |
|
The discussion contained in this report is related to a portion of the Library Sub-Element of the City of Sunnyvale General Plan that was adopted by the City Council on February 6, 1990. Sub-Element Policy 6.2A.2: Give high priority to the collection of materials for young children, their parents, teachers, and day care providers is supported by Action Statement 6.2A.2a: Select multiple copies of most wanted titles for young children. |

DISCUSSION |
|
The Wal-Mart Foundation has offered grants to benefit local communities. Sunnyvale Public Library has had a significant increase in demand for "Easy Reader" materials for beginning readers. The Wal-Mart grant funds will be used to purchase these materials for the Library for use by young children in the community. |

FISCAL IMPACT |
|
The Finance and Library Departments agree that to facilitate the expenditure of this small grant, the $1,000 should be placed in the Library's Donation Fund and spent from this fund. |
