RTC#03-125

April 8, 2003

SUBJECT:

Suggested Activities to Show Sunnyvale's Support of Troops

REPORT IN BRIEF

At the request of Council, staff has researched possible activities to demonstrate the City’s support of America’s military troops. Staff sought out non-political activities that would clearly demonstrate support of our troops without implying or stating support for combat activities.

BACKGROUND

This is a new activity and the City has not previously engaged in a similar demonstration of support.

EXISTING POLICY

None

DISCUSSION

There are several possible activities to demonstrate Sunnyvale’s support for our troops. Some of these are no-cost items, and they include:

  • The addition of a graphic and text to the Sunnyvale Internet web site
  • The addition of a similar graphic into the slide rotation on KSUN
  • Modification of the Harbinger masthead to incorporate a symbolic graphic
  • Creation of a "Military Service Page" on the Sunnyvale Internet web site featuring name, branch of service and photo of the military member

Note that in all cases, graphic design would be done in-house by Sunnyvale Communications Division.

Low-cost activities (less than $500) would include:

  • Customizing the advertising space on the City’s postage meter imprint to include a supporting statement ($60, approximately 3 weeks to deliver)
  • Round, 1.25" lapel button, including one-color graphic (350 @ $350, shipping and tax included). Nine days production time, plus shipping.
  • Simple yellow ribbon metal pins, imprinted "Support Our Troops," approximately 1" in size. (100 @ $1.75 each - $175 per 100 -, plus tax and shipping.) Approximately one week to deliver.
  • Four-color, 17"x22" posters including a graphic and text message, suitable for display at Sunnyvale public buildings. (15 copies @ $ 30 each - $450 total -, including tax and shipping.)

Significant-cost activities include:

  • Iconic mylar lapel pins, .75" x 1.5" (similar to the Sunnyvale lapel pin) with a ribbon graphic and the text "Sunnyvale Supports Our Troops" (300 @ $2.00 each; 500 @ $1.40 plus $175 setup charge, plus tax and shipping). This equates to a cost of $775 for 300, $875 for 500, plus tax and shipping.
  • A "Sunnyvale Supports Our Troops" banner or sign for the Mathilda/El Camino northwest corner. (Approximately $1,500.) Due to existing posting schedules, the Wolfe/El Camino banner site is not currently available.
  • Creation of eight-foot plywood yellow "ribbons" to be mounted on the posts at the Wolfe/El Camino banner site. These would be produced in-house by Parks and Recreation. Cost, including design, construction, mounting and eventual removal for two units is approximately $1,500. In addition, a limited number of smaller copies could be produced for selected City buildings at only a slight increase in the materials cost.
  • Vehicle stickers (static removable vinyl, 3.75" x 7.5") two-color, ribbon icon and text reading "Sunnyvale Supports Our Troops". (300 @ $3.29 including tax and shipping - $950 – production and delivery three weeks.) Note: Sunnyvale operates approximately 650 vehicles, including police, fire and other classes.

FISCAL IMPACT

See discussion entry, above. Staff has arbitrarily attempted to limit item costs to approximately $1,500.
