DRAFT HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION |
2003-0065 - City of Sunnyvale - Application for a Heritage Resource designation to reconstruct an agricultural support structure. The property is located at 550 East Remington Avenue (Community Center) in a P-F (Public Facility) Zoning District. (APN: 211-24-021) GC
Gerri Caruso, Project Planner, presented the staff report. She noted that the barn would provide a significant symbol of the City’s past agricultural heritage particularly in the Orchard Heritage Park setting near the OHPIE interpretive center. She further noted that the barn was donated with additional funds for reconstruction and maintenance. Staff was able to make the required findings and recommended approval of the Heritage Resource Designation.
Elizabeth Corning, Vice President of the Historical Society and on behalf of Laura Babcock presented the planned festivities around the opening of the barn. She noted that the official opening date is May 15. She further noted that there would be an official grand opening, which would include a barn dance with food & drinks including beer & wine. Furthermore, she stated that the public is welcome and that there is no admission fee.
Comm. Reid asked Ms. Corning where exactly is the barn located. Ms. Corning specified the location of the barn.
Comm. Reid asked if the attendees to the grand opening need to be dressed appropriately for the barn dance. Ms. Corning replied no.
Chair Shoemaker thanked Ms. Corning for the presentation and invitation to the Grand Opening.
Comm. Love asked if sprinkler systems would be required to meet current building codes. Staff responded no since the barn was constructed under the historic building code. Chair Shoemaker concurred with staff.
Ms. Caruso also noted that the barn has already been relocated and rebuilt. The City could not officially designate the barn as a Heritage Resource until it was actually in Sunnyvale’s jurisdiction.
