NOVEMBER 17, 2004

 

Following the ‘Dorolou Swirsky Youth Opportunities Trust Fund’ Study Session held in the Garden Conference Room of City Hall on November 17, 2004, at 6:00 p.m., the Arts Commission met in regular session in Council Chambers at City Hall, 456 W. Olive Avenue at 7:00 p.m. with Chair Draganowski Davis presiding.

 

ROLL CALL

 

Present: Chair Monica Draganowski Davis, Vice Chair Wallace Harper, Susan Buchs, Bob Obrey

 

Absent: Dixie Carney 

 

Staff Present: Robert Walker, Director of Parks and Recreation, Cathy E. Merrill, Assistant to the Director of Parks and Recreation, Nancy Bolgard Steward, Superintendent of Arts and Recreation

CONSENT CALENDAR

 

1.a. Approval of Draft Minutes, October 20, 2004 Meeting

Commissioner Buchs moved, seconded by, Commissioner Obrey to approve the October 20, 2004, Arts Commission Minutes as submitted.

Motion carried unanimously 4-0

Commissioner Carney absent

CITIZENS TO BE HEARD                  

 

Chair Draganowski Davis opened the meeting for Public Appearances.  There were none and the Public Appearances were closed.

NON-AGENDA ITEMS AND COMMENTS

 

  • BOARDMEMBERS OR COMMISSIONERS ORAL COMMENTS  

Commissioner Obrey supplied a November 10, 2004, San Jose Mercury News article, “Arts Funding:  An Investment in Innovation.”  Chair Draganowski Davis asked for copies to be sent to each Commissioner.  She will contact the author to learn of any specific suggestions he might have.

 

Commissioner Buchs passed.

 

Commissioner Harper described his recent trips to the Japanese-American Museum and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.  He noted a “Snap-Shot” show that might be of particular interest to the Sunnyvale Photo Club. 

 

STAFF ORAL COMMENTS  

 

Director Walker noted the video taped recording of the October 19 Council action on RTC-#04-366, Provide Greater Enforcement of Art in Private Development Requirements – Study Issue, will be viewed this evening as an information only item on the agenda for the benefit of the Arts Commission.   

INFORMATION ONLY ITEMS

  • Staff Liaison Written Report

Ms. Merrill stated her staff report remains as submitted.  She also emphasized the portion of her report related to the Commissioners going “on-the-record” if they want a specific comment recorded in the minutes.

  • Director Walker indicated that per the request of the City Manager, the City Attorney will attend the next Arts Commission meeting to review the Brown Act.
  • Ms. Steward announced the “Unveiling” of the Community Quilt in the Senior Center Laurel Room on December 3, at 1:00 p.m. and that individual invitations will be sent.
