ARTS Commission

REGULAR MEETING

JULY 18, 2007

The Sunnyvale Arts Commission met in regular session in the City Hall Council Chambers, 456 W. Olive Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA at 7 p.m. with Vice Chair Obrey presiding.

CALL TO ORDER / SALUTE TO THE FLAG

Vice Chair Obrey called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and led the salute to the flag.

CONSENT CALENDAR

1.A.  Approval of Draft Minutes from Regular Arts Commission Meeting of June 20, 2007

MOTION: Commissioner Carney moved, Vice Chair Obrey seconded, to approve the Consent Calendar.

VOTE: Motion passed unanimously 2-0. Commissioner Tara Martin-Milius abstained because she was not a member of the Commission in June 2007.

PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS

2.  Council Policy 7.2.19 Boards and Commissions

Assistant to the Director Merrill and Commissioners reviewed Council Policy 7.2.19.

Commissioner Carney questioned the apparent restrictiveness of the policy regarding excused and unexcused absences. Assistant to the Director Merrill noted the difference between regular meetings and special meetings and said the policy applies to absences from regular meetings only.

Vice Chair Obrey opened the public hearing. There were no public testimonies and the public hearing was closed.

3.  Commission Work Plan Calendar Review

Commissioner Martin-Milius inquired about how to get an item on the meeting agenda. Assistant to the Director Merrill said the request should go to staff so the item can be added to the agenda.

Director Lewis noted that the December 13, 2007, Special Council Meeting and Study Issues/Budget Issues Workshop will be changed to a date (to be determined) in January 2008.

Vice Chair Obrey opened the public hearing. There were no public testimonies and the public hearing was closed.

4.  Review of City of Sunnyvale Code of Ethics

Assistant to the Director Merrill asked Commissioners to review the Code of Ethics. There were no questions.

5.  Election of Commission Officers for FY 2007/2008

The public hearing was opened. There were no public testimonies and the public hearing was closed.

Vice Chair Obrey opened the floor for nominations for Chair.

Commissioner Carney nominated Vice Chair Obrey who accepted.

There being no more nominations, Vice Chair Obrey closed the nominations for Chair.

VOTE:  3-0. Vice Chair Obrey was elected as FY 2007/2008 Chair.

Chair Obrey opened the floor for nominations for Vice Chair.

Commissioner Carney nominated Commissioner Martin-Milius who accepted.

There being no more nominations, Chair Obrey closed the nominations for Vice Chair.

VOTE:  3-0. Commissioner Martin-Milius was elected as FY 2007/2008 Vice Chair.

NON-AGENDA ITEMS AND COMMENTS

COMMISSION

Chair Obrey attended “An Evening with Bill Maher” at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts, but he left the performance early because of the poor acoustics. He also noted the heavy traffic.

STAFF

Assistant to the Director Merrill informed newly elected Chair Obrey and Vice Chair Martin-Milius that Chair/Vice Chair training is scheduled for July 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the West Conference Room. The City Clerk’s Office will also provide notification of the training.
