PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS

2.  Last Chance to Propose Study Issues or Budget Issues for 2008

Vice Chair Martin-Milius proposed a study issue to be coordinated with the Chamber of Commerce, Art Club, and City for an art/sculpture event. The study would explore the feasibility of the City sponsoring an event in which artworks depicting a symbol representing Sunnyvale would be designed by local artists, displayed, and auctioned off with the proceeds supporting local art programs.

Vice Chair Martin-Milius proposed a study issue regarding performing arts which would provide a sense of place at City schools for students to work on with business and community members. Vice Chair Martin-Milius will give this study issue more consideration and discuss with Assistant to the Director Merrill at a later time.

Chair Obrey opened the public hearing. There were no public testimonies and the public hearing was closed.

3.  Promotion of National Arts and Humanities Month (October 2007)

Assistant to the Director Merrill said that October is Arts and Humanities Month and explained that staff could request a City Council proclamation on the Arts Commission’s behalf. Vice Chair Martin-Milius agreed to accept the proclamation at the City Council meeting on September 25, 2007.

Commissioner Carney asked since October is Arts and Humanities Month, who would represent humanities? Staff will check into this.

COMMISSION

Vice Chair Martin-Milius inquired about the policies and philosophies behind the original funded Art in Public Places program, not simply the location of the art, but information on the driver behind the program. Assistant to the Director Merrill stated it was approximately 20 years ago and there may not be much historical information available.

Commissioner Carney inquired about the Art in Public Places (AIPP) funds to be used for maintenance of the artwork. Assistant to the Director Merrill explained that a portion of the funds are set aside for maintenance of the artwork.

Commissioner Carney asked if monies were allocated to protect the Senior Center soft sculpture from fading and, if so, where did the funds come from. Assistant to the Director Merrill said she would find out and report back to the Commission at the next meeting.
