SCHEDULED PRESENTATION
Discussion with DPS
Captain Stivers presented the committee with a map of reported Crimes in Sunnyvale from May to November of 2004 in order to show whether crimes occurred in the vicinity of bike/ped trails. In addition he discussed the roles of the Neighborhood Resource Officers.
Mayer asked if there has been an upsurge in gang activity, and whether officers on bike patrol could be helpful for enforcement of gang activity. Stivers responded that he doesn’t have the data to answer definitively whether gang activity has increased. He stated that officers do use the bike for patrolling. It is up to the officers individual needs and discretion.
Jackson asked if bike patrols are used in non-park related settings. He also suggested that any helmets given away by public safety be ID’d with a marker, potentially the child’s name.
Stivers discussed the CARES program to distribute car mounted speed radars to residents and neighborhood groups.

INFORMATION ONLY ITEMS
Jackson requested that staff put the Bicycle Transportation Account grant on a future agenda. He also discussed the traffic calming feature on the corner of Mary Avenue and Blair Avenue. He stated that with the feature there is only 11.5 feet of travel lane, which is not sufficient for bicyclists and motorists to share. He also stated that the feature is not visible and the current reflectors are not adequate.
Mayer also believes that the feature narrows the travel lane to an unacceptable width.
Cogill stated that the measure only uses the width of the road that was previously taken up by parking. The roadway was not narrowed.
Jackson also recapped the Wolfe Road Bicycle Route project public meeting for the committee. He recommended that the committee work to get public support for bike lanes instead of a shared route.
