PRESENT: DeAngelo, Gutierrez, Halliburton, Lazaro, Matray, Ozdemir

 

ABSENT: Jevons

 

STAFF PRESENT: Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager; Claire Garcia, Sr. Office Assistant

 

GUEST PRESENT:  Angela Carmack, California State Department of Social Services

 

GUEST SPEAKER:  None

 

CALL TO ORDER:  Chair Lazaro called the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m.

 

PUBLIC APPEARANCES:  No members of the public addressed the Board.

 

GENERAL BUSINESS

 

Welcome

BOARD MEMBERS welcomed back Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, from maternity leave.

 

BOARD MEMBER Lazaro motioned to excuse BOARD MEMBER Jevon’s absence as she had a conflict with her work schedule.  BOARD MEMBER DeAngelo seconded the motion.

MOTION CARRIED

 

Angela Carmack, a Licensing Program Analyst from the Department of Social Services was present as a guest and has submitted an application for the CCAB

 

Approval of Minutes from 1/08/04 CCAB meeting

Board Member Matray noted that the number of CCAB vacancies should be changed from three to four and Halliburton’s name needs to be added to “Review Draft 2004 CCAB Work Plan”.  Correction noted.  With no other modifications to the minutes, BOARD MEMBER Lazaro motioned to accept the minutes as modified.  BOARD MEMBER Matray seconded the motion.

Update on the First City of Sunnyvale  Excellence in Early Education Award

A total of 23 nomination forms were received: 8 Family Child Care Provider, 11 Child Care Center and 4 Teacher.  The Board agreed to hold a Special Meeting on May 4th from 1 – 3 p.m. to review the nomination forms.  

 

Update on One-Stop Resource Center Study Issue:

Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager will meet with the collaborators to determine how to move forward, and to discuss funding.  

 

Recognition of Outgoing Members

Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, presented certificates to the following Board Members terming out.  She thanked them for their time, dedication, and good will.

·         Suzanne Lazaro

·         Anneke Matray

 

Child Care Manager Quarterly Update:

Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, reported on the following:

 

1)     Study Issue: Assess the feasibility of developing a program that would facilitate partnerships between local business and Sunnyvale child care providers for the purpose of assisting local business with contributing funding, supplies, equipment, or pro-bono services to Sunnyvale child care programs, will be studied this year.

2)     Sunnyvale Family Child Care Network will now hold their meetings at Sunnyvale Community Services.

3)     Sunnyvale Family Child Care Network used a portion of their grant funding to fund a Sunnyvale librarian to visit family child care homes to hold story time with the children.

4)     Hosted a training in conjunction with UC Davis Extension, Partnering with Parents on March 20, 2004.  Six providers attended.

 

Discussion of CCAB Recruitment Process

The CCAB will have four vacancies that need to be filled.  Current CCAB members will play an integral role in the recruitment of new members.     Board Member Halliburton stated she referred one person and Board Member Matray stated she referred two people.  The City Clerk’s office has received two applications.

 

Board Member Lazaro suggested that new members have an orientation with Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, to review the study issues process.   

 

Announcements

Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, announced she has returned to her position on a part-time, temporary basis for the next three to six months.

 

Board Member, Halliburton, handed out flyers regarding information on a pilot program focusing on the inclusion of special needs children in early education settings.

Board Member, Halliburton, announced she will be relocating to Seattle, WA.

Staff Comments

Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, handed out copies of a press release, Sunnyvale beings Budget Review; Public Input to be Sought and an editorial published in the Sun, Public Meetings are Missing the Public.

South Annex Conference Room.
