SUNNYVALE Child Care Advisory Board

The Child Care Advisory Board met on April 25, 2006 in the West Conference Room, 456 W. Olive Avenue, at 11:30 a.m. with Jacque Sell, Vice-Chair, presiding.

ROLL CALL

Board Members Present:      Emily Gutierrez, Hilal Ozdemir, Jacqueline Sell, Lisa Taiz,

Board Member Absent:        Angela Carmack, excused; Carole Jevons, excused; Maxine Shea, excused

Staff Present:                    Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager; Claire Garcia, Sr. Office Assistant

PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS

CCAB selected the winners for the Award for Excellence in Early Education.  BOARD MEMBER SELL motioned to award Connis Olson of Community Preschool, the Child Care Center or Preschool Director award.  BOARD MEMBER TAIZ seconded the motion.

                   MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER SELL motioned to award Manijeh Khazeni of Right Start Day Care the Family Child Care Provider award.  BOARD MEMBER GUTIERREZ seconded the motion.

                   MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER TAIZ motioned to award Room 7 teachers of Community Preschool: Ms. Au, Ms. Chammapun, Ms. Golosman, Ms. Smith and Mrs. Bryant the Child Care or Preschool Teacher award.  BOARD MEMBER SELL seconded the motion.

                   MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER TAIZ motioned to award Appleseed Montessori, Dunford School the Preschool / Child Care Center (preschool-age) award.  BOARD MEMBER OZDEMIR seconded the motion.

                   MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER SELL motioned to disqualify any nominee who was found to have a Type A violation over the past two years from this year’s Award program,  and add the following disclaimer to next year’s application:  Licensing files for all applications will be reviewed.  The CCAB reserves the right to disqualify any application with a licensing violation over the past two years and will disqualify any applicant with a Type A violation.  Community Care Licensing can be reached at 408-277-1286.  BOARD MEMBER TAIZ seconded the motion.

Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager provided an update on the Universal Preschool Study Issue.

Potential study issues for 2007: Parent education on licensing, evaluations, policies, etc.  Two study issues will be resubmitted: Support providers serving special needs children and Support providers seeking accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. 

NON-AGENDA ITEMS AND COMMENTS

·         BOARD MEMBER TAIZ suggested CCAB do site visits on next year’s nominees for the Award for Excellence in Early Education.

·         BOARD MEMBER GUTIERREZ & BOARD MEMBER JEVONS (not present) were thanked for their dedication in serving in the CCAB for four years.

INFORMATION ONLY ITEMS

·         Coryn Campbell, Neighborhood and Community Services Manager provided an update on the recruitment status for the Youth, Family & Child Care Resources Coordinator position.  The recruitment is now closed and the interview phase will take place shortly.  CCAB members who are interested in participating in the panel interview can contact Coryn Campbell.  Kristen will be leaving the City in June. 

·         Health & Safety Fair will take place Saturday, May 6.  The Sunnyvale Family Child Care Network will have a booth with Child Care Resources.  The City of Sunnyvale Award for Excellence in Early Education recipients will also be announced at the fair.  CCAB members are invited to participate in the Award presentation.

·         Two seats will be vacant on the CCAB as of July 2006.  Applications are due by May 12^th to the City Clerk’s Office.  Applications can be downloaded on the city’s web site at www.sunnyvale.ca.gov .

·         Next Regular Meeting: July 25, 2006, 1-3 p.m., Lobby Conference Room, City Hall
