SUNNYVALE Child Care Advisory Board

The Child Care Advisory Board met in a special session on May 4, 2004 in the South Annex Conference Room, 603 All America Way, at 1 p.m. with Suzanne Lazaro presiding.

ROLL CALL

Board Present: Carole Jevons, Araceli DeAngelo, Susannah Halliburton, Suzanne Lazaro, Hilal Ozdemir, Anneke Matray

Board Member Absent: Emily Gutierrez, excused

Staff: Kristen Nigriny, Child Care Manager, Claire Garcia, Sr. Office Assistant

Others: Angela Caramak, Dept. of Social Services guest), Maxine Shay, Choices for Children (guest).

PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS

Review applications and select winners of the First Annual City of Sunnyvale Award for Excellence in Early Education.

BOARD MEMBER Lazaro motioned to not consider Community Preschool and Children’s Creative Learning Center in the Center category since Directors nominated themselves. However, they can be considered in the teacher category. BOARD MEMBER DeAngelo seconded the motion.

MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER Lazaro motioned to consider Frank Difede from Children’s Creative Learning Center in the teacher category.   BOARD MEMBER Halliburton seconded the motion.

MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER DeAngelo motioned to add a Director category to next year’s nomination form.   BOARD MEMBER Lazaro seconded the motion.

MOTION CARRIED

BOARD MEMBER DeAngelo motioned to split the Center category by age group: Preschool and School age, effective immediately and add these categories to next year’s nomination form.  BOARD MEMBER Ozdemir seconded the motion.

MOTION CARRIED

The following recipients were determined:

Family Child Care Provider:  Bonnie Hasson of Bonnie’s House Play School

Child Care Center: Cumberland Child Development Center

Preschool: Appleseed Montessori, Warner Campus

Teacher: Lynda Brown of Appleseed Montessori, Dunford Campus

NON-AGENDA ITEMS AND COMMENTS

The BOARD suggested that the Award recipients for next year should be announced during April, the Month of the Young Child.

• STAFF ORAL COMMENTS

Child Care Services will notify the recipients and they will be presented their certificates in June.
