SUNNYVALE board of Library Trustees
March 5, 2007
The Board of Library Trustees met in regular session in Council Chambers, 650 West Olive Avenue at 7:05 p.m. with Jim Griffith presiding.

Vice Chair Lilly moved, and Boardmember Meagher seconded, approval of Items 1.A and 1.B as presented. Motion carried unanimously.

PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS:
2. Library of the Future Project Status:
Administrative Librarian Susan Denniston reminded the Board that the Monday, March 26 meeting has been rescheduled to Monday, April 2. The Library of the Future – Facility Scenarios RTC is being prepared for City Manager’s approval. The RTC will be presented to the Board at their April 2 meeting. Chair Griffith commented that the building cost has increased from previous estimates.
Chair Griffith opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing.
3. Relationships with Outside Groups:
Administrative Librarian Denniston informed the Board that the agreement with the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library is currently in its second year and will expire in June of 2008. There is no agreement with the Philatelic Library at the moment. The Department of Parks and Recreation is currently working on a Study Issue regarding Options for Use of Raynor Activity Center. Library staff will be participating in the study issue due to use of the Raynor facility by the Friends and the Philatelic Library. A brief overview of functions for the Friends and the Philatelic Library were provided.
Chair Griffith opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing.
4. Deletion of Library Policies: A-2 Philosophy and Principles of Sunnyvale Public Library; A-15: Patron Request; A-36 Management Bookshelf; CI-6: Lost in Circulation books; CI-7: Use of Library Cards for Demand Items; CI-14: Circulation System Failure:
Administrative Librarian Denniston informed the Board that all of the policies slated for deletion have become obsolete or have been incorporated into other Library policies.
Chair Griffith opened the public hearing and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing.
Board member Pathak moved, and Vice Chair Lilly seconded, the deletion of Library Policies: A-2 Philosophy and Principles; A-15: Patron Request; A-36: Management Bookshelf; CI-6: Lost in Circulation Books; CI-7: Use of Library Cards for Demand Items and CI-14: Circulation System Failure. Motion carried unanimously.
NON-AGENDA ITEMS AND COMMENTS

Chair Griffith informed the Board that the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library book sale is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Raynor Facility.
· STAFF ORAL COMMENTS
Administrative Librarian Denniston noted the following:
§ Library Legislative Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in Sacramento.
§ The Library will be participating in the Career Fair at Fremont High School on Wednesday, March 14.
§ The annual volunteer recognition event is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, April 24. Invitations have been provided.
§ Library Specialist III Todd Sandigo has been promoted to the Library Assistant position in the Cataloging/Technical Services division. The Library currently has two Library Specialist III vacancies.
§ Twenty short video clips from the Sunnyvale Voices digital storytelling project have been placed on YouTube. The videos are searchable in YouTube, as well as linked from the Sunnyvale Voices web page from the Library’s site.
§ In January, 140 students used the Live Homework Help service, wholly funded this year by a grant from the California State Library. 92% of users responded that they were happy the Library offers this service.
§ In February, the Library signed up its 1,200th person to the e-mail subscription lists. The lists are used to inform patrons of Library events, program, services and meetings.
§ The Library’s circulation is projecting to be over 2.2 million items by the end of this fiscal year, which would be a 15% increase. Visitors to the Library are projected to be over 750,000, which would be more than a 4% increase.
§ The next Board of Library Trustees meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 2 and will be held in Council Chambers.
