SUNNYVALE board of Library Trustees
February 7, 2005
The Board of Library Trustees met in regular session in Council Chambers, 650 West Olive Avenue at 7:05 p.m. with Pam Anderson presiding.

Boardmember Flaherty moved, and Boardmember Griffith seconded, approval of the Consent Calendar. Motion carried unanimously.

CITIZENS TO BE HEARD: |
Daniel Goldsmith, a Sunnyvale Public Library customer, expressed his concerns regarding library service budget reductions and the implementation of fees for feature DVD/Videos. Boardmembers and Interim Director Denniston thanked him and responded to his concern.

Bill Soby, a Sc[i]3 Foundation Boardmember, presented a brief overview on the progress of the Foundation and reviewed with the Board future projects the Foundation is working on . Boardmembers and Interim Director Denniston thanked him for his presentation. |
PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS:
2. Review Feedback Cards
Interim Director Denniston presented a review of Feedback Cards from July to December 2004. Interim Director Denniston noted an increase of feedback cards in the "Policies and Procedures – Checkout Desk/Circulation" category due to the $1.50 fee for feature DVD/Video films. Discussion ensued regarding customer service, wireless internet access, and the organization of the classical/jazz cd collection.
Chair Anderson opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing.
3. CALTAC Workshop
Interim Director Denniston reminded the Board of the 2005 CALTAC workshop “Come blow your horn” library success stories with keynote speaker CA State Librarian Susan Hildreth. The workshop is scheduled to be held on Saturday, March 5 at the Dublin Public Library. Boardmembers interested in attending should notify Library Administration by Friday, February 11.
4. Board/Commission Training
Interim Director Denniston informed the Board that the City Clerk’s office is coordinating training sessions for Boards/Commissions on the following subjects: Budget Process; Neighborhood Community Services; and Brown Act, Public Records, and Parliamentary Procedures.
Chair Anderson opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed
the public hearing.
Boardmember Griffith moved, and Boardmember Flaherty seconded, for all three training session to be presented at three future board meetings dependent on presenter availability. The motion carried unanimously.
NON-AGENDA ITEMS AND COMMENTS
· BOARDMEMBER ORAL COMMENTS
Boardmember Flaherty announced that he is an active volunteer on the Sc[i]3 Foundation.
Boardmember Griffith announced that Supervising Librarian Christine Doxtad, Interim Director Denniston and he attended Day in the District on Friday, January 28 in San Jose to discuss library issues with State Senator Elaine Alquist’s aide, John Hellesoe. He provided an overview of the meeting.
· STAFF ORAL COMMENTS
Interim Director Denniston noted the following:
§ City Manager Amy Chan has appointed Deborah Barrow Library Director. Deborah is scheduled to arrive Monday, February 28. A public reception is scheduled for Sunday, April 10 in the library.
§ City Manager Amy Chan has appointed Robert Walker Assistant City Manager.
§ Provided an overview of Freedom of Speech rights for citizens on the library plaza.
§ The Fiscal Issues Workshop was held on Monday, January 31. Council decided not to implement additional service budget reductions in Fiscal Year 04/05.
§ The first series of library staff training on the new library automation system was held in January. The next series of training will be held in March. The library system is scheduled to go live during the month of May.
§ The library staff “overdrive/ebook” training was held on Wednesday, February 2. Overdrive is a shared collection of electronic audiobooks, best sellers, and Spanish language materials with various neighboring libraries. The collection is scheduled to launch Tuesday, February 22. Books will be downloadable (not in the library) to either Adobe or MobiPocket ebook reader devices.
§ Sc[i]3 has received some excellent publicity recently, including articles in the Sunnyvale Sun, the Recorder, and a taping by CBS Evening Magazine scheduled to be aired Wednesday, February 23. A tentative appointment has been scheduled for Sunnyvale Council to meet with Stephen Pinkos, Deputy Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Deputy Director of the Commerce Department’s U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) during the National League of Cities Conference in March in Washington, D.C.
§ At their January 11 meeting, Council approved the Library’s Legislative Action Policies.
§ In response to Boardmembers request to announce upcoming library programs to Council, Supervising Librarian Steve Sloan will provide the Board with a link to the Between the Lines calendar via email when it becomes available, typically two weeks prior to the printed copy being released.
§ At the February 1 Council meeting, Mayor Chu proclaimed February Silicon Valley Reads Month. Sunnyvale residents and library customers are encouraged to read Epitaph for a Peach by David Mas Masumoto.
§ Period 7, ending on January 15, yielded the highest revenue to date for the feature film fee, $9,659.
§ At their Monday, March 14 meeting, the Board will be reviewing two Reports to Council. The meeting is scheduled to be held in the Library Program Room. The review of Relationships with Outside Groups Agreement has been postponed to the April 4 Board meeting.
§ Program flyers and announcements were distributed.
