Special Presentation to Amy Chan by Mayor Howe
November 9, 2004
Sunnyvale has a long tradition of exceptional service to the community, and we have received many awards and much recognition over the years because of this.
And while it is our job as a city council to create policy and give direction to the City, it is the job of City staff to make it happen.
Most of the time there is little or no recognition at the individual level for staff who ensure we provide excellent service to our community and recognition is even more rare for senior staff in Sunnyvale.
But tonight I and my Council colleagues want to make a special presentation.
Amy, will you please join me at the podium?
I know recognition makes you uncomfortable, Amy, but for tonight, you will just need to suffer through this.
Sunnyvale is extremely fortunate. For nearly a quarter of a century, Amy has given her all to this City. As the Assistant City Manager, Amy provided much of the direct supervision that led to Sunnyvale’s international reputation.
Early this year, Amy stepped up to become our Interim City Manager, guiding staff across the City and working very hard with this City Council. This has been an interesting year for Sunnyvale. We have restored our connections with the community though outreach meetings and a high level of Council and staff responsiveness and we have seen some key staff leave for personal reasons.
While change is part of the positive evolution of an organization, Sunnyvale has remained a well-managed City with a bright future and a large amount of credit goes to this lady, Amy Chan.
City Council recently met with Amy and conducted a performance review of her nearly one year as Interim City Manager. The review was so positive, that Council tonight voted (unanimously) to offer Amy the position of City Manager, eliminating “interim” from her title. And in a true reflection of Amy’s dedication to this City, Amy has agreed to become our new City Manager.
I would like to congratulate and thank Amy for taking on this new role, and I applaud her personal sacrifice in continuing to serve our City and its residents.
As a small measure of our appreciation, I would like to present Amy with this symbol of our gratitude. The inscription reads: Outstanding City Manager, Amy Chan, Presented by Mayor John N. Howe and the Sunnyvale City Council, November 9, 2004. I would like to present this to you with the heartfelt thanks of this Council in recognition of your extraordinary service to the City.
Amy, you truly are an outstanding city manager.
