October 5, 2004
The City Council met in study session at City Hall in the West Conference Room at 456 W. Olive Street, Sunnyvale, California on October 5, 2004 at 7:00 p.m., with Vice Mayor Chu presiding.
City Council Members Present:
Mayor John Howe, Vice Mayor Dean Chu, Council Members Fred Fowler, Julia Miller, Ron Swegles, Melinda Hamilton, and Otto Lee
City Council Members Absent: None
City Staff Present:
City Manager Amy Chan, City Attorney Valerie Armento, Deputy City Manager Chuck Schwabe, Neighborhood and Community Services Manager Coryn Campbell, Management Analyst Peter Bassett, and City Clerk Susan Ramos.
Visitors/Guests Present: None
Call to Order: 7:00 p.m.
Study Session Summary:
Vice Mayor Chu opened the floor for Council discussion and suggestions. Council Member Miller summarized her reasons for bringing this matter forward and provided information she received from the City of Mountain View regarding its Council meeting times. Comments were received from each Council Member and discussion ensued regarding start and end times, frequency of meetings, managing questions and comments on agenda items, providing opportunity for public comments, continuing items, study sessions and closed sessions.
Council Member Miller requested staff provide Council with a copy of a previous Report to Council regarding changing the Council meeting start time from 8:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Council directed staff to conduct a survey with other local cities about their Council meetings’ start and end times, frequency, study sessions, closed sessions, public comments, public hearing items, etc., and bring back a Report to Council with this information before the end of the year for further direction.
