July 2002 to January 2005

In conjunction with the City of Mountain View and Congresswoman Anna Eshoo’s office, the City lobbied extensively against the 129th Rescue Wing’s proposal to move from Moffett Field to Castle Air Force Base. 

 

November 19, 2004

November 19, 2004:  Several Councilmembers and staff visited the Onizuka site to meet with the Base Commander and learn more about Onizuka and its operations. 

 

January 6, 2005

City staff attended the California Council on Base Support and Retention’s Public Forum in Sacramento.  Governor Schwarzenegger established this Council in November 2004 to coordinate with California’s congressional delegation and state/local leaders on issues related to military base retention.  The Council is chaired by former White House Chief of Staff, Leon Panetta. 

 

January 11, 2005

The 129th Rescue Wing dropped its proposal to relocate from Moffett Field.

 

January 14, 2005

The Mayor sent a letter to the California Council on Base Support and Retention in support of retaining Onizuka Air Force Station during the 2005 BRAC process. 

 

March 11, 2005

While in Washington D.C for the National League of Cities Conference, several City Councilmembers and the City Manager met with officials at the Pentagon to discuss the 2005 BRAC process.

 

March 15, 2005

While in Washington D.C for the National League of Cities Conference, several City Councilmembers and the City Manager met with Congresswoman Anna Eshoo to discuss the 2005 BRAC and the potential impact to Sunnyvale.

 

April 4, 2005

City staff met with Mountain View representatives to coordinate plans to respond to the BRAC list in the event that Onizuka and/or the 129th Rescue Wing were impacted by BRAC. 

 

May 13, 2005

The DoD announced the 2005 BRAC recommendations.  The DoD recommended the closure of Onizuka Air Force Station – no impact to the 129th Rescue Wing.

 

May 16, 2005

City staff and several Councilmembers met with the 129th Rescue Wing’s Base Commander.

 

June 7, 2005

City Council held a study session to discuss the BRAC process and implications for Onizuka.  Council was advised that staff’s intent was to hold a public hearing to solicit community input, to work with Congresswoman Anna Eshoo’s office, and to begin to explore formation of a Local Redevelopment Authority. 

 

June 10, 2005

Staff began to coordinate publicity for a July 7th public hearing on the BRAC recommendations and Onizuka. 

 

June 14, 2005

City staff met with representatives from Congresswoman Anna Eshoo’s and Senator Diane Feinstein’s offices about the possible closure of Onizuka.

 

June 16, 2005

City staff attended a workshop in Sacramento on how to challenge the BRAC recommendations.  The workshop was hosted by California’s Office of Military & Aerospace Support.

 

July 7, 2005

City staff conducted a public hearing to solicit feedback from residents on the importance of Onizuka to the community.  (For more information about this public hearing, see “Public Input on the Possible Closure of Onizuka” below).

 

July 14, 2005

City staff attended a BRAC Commission regional hearing in Los Angeles.
