Update on Downtown Wayfinding Program

July 31, 2007

The City Council met in the West Conference Room at the City Hall, Sunnyvale, California on July 31, 2007, 5 PM, with Vice Mayor Tony Spitaleri presiding.

Call to Order:

Vice Mayor Spitaleri called the Study Session to order at 5:05 PM

 

Study Session Summary:  

Staff presented the history of the Wayfinding program and major milestones in the downtown. Images of the Wayfinding conceptual design were presented. Staff explained that designs are still being refined.

 

Questions & Comments from City Council:

·         Potential for coordinating Branding and Wayfinding programs

·         Clarification that Wayfinding would not include gateway entries into the City.

·         Discussion of patent or trademark opportunities for City signs.

·         Discussion of selected colors vs. official City colors

·         Would individual stores be identified with Wayfinding signs?

·         Electronic parking availability information signs

·         Gateway arching over Mathilda

·         Would program also include parking time limits?

·         Text oriented sideways could be difficult to read

·         Background colors and text need to be carefully selected for readability

·         Suggestion for a design competition for Wayfinding program

·         Speaker provided clarification on gateway design concepts
