City Council Study Session Summary

Review of Recruitment Plan for New City Manager

April 8, 2008

 

The City Council met in a study session at City Hall in the West Conference Room, Sunnyvale City Hall, 456 W. Olive Avenue, Sunnyvale, California on April 8, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with Mayor Spitaleri presiding.

 

City Councilmembers Present: Vice Mayor Melinda Hamilton, John Howe, Otto Lee, Ron Swegles, Christopher Moylan, David Whittum.

 

City Councilmembers Absent: None

 

City Staff Present:

Amy Chan, City Manager

David Kahn, City Attorney

Erwin Young, Director of Human Resources

Karen Woblesky, Human Resources Manager

 

Also Present:

Bill Avery, William Avery and Associates

 

Call to Order: 6:00 p.m.

 

Study Session Summary: 

Bill Avery provided the City Council with a detailed summary of the proposed recruitment plan (Review and Discussion of Recruitment Plan for City Manager Presentation by Bill Avery) for the City Manager selection process. He responded to the Council’s questions and received input regarding the recruitment plan.

 

MOTION: Councilmember Howe moved and Councilmember Moylan seconded to approve the establishment of a Council sub-committee, of no more than three Council members appointed by the Mayor, and formed prior to the next City Council meeting, to oversee the City Manager recruitment and selection process. 

 

VOTE: 5-2 (Councilmembers Swegles and Whittum dissented)

 

MOTION: Councilmember Howe moved and Vice Mayor Hamilton seconded that the job profile for the next City Manager, developed by Mr. Avery, and reviewed by the Council sub-committee be approved by the entire City Council. 

 

VOTE: 6-1 (Councilmember Whittum dissented)

 

MOTION: Councilmember Howe moved and Vice-Mayor Hamilton seconded that the issue of interview panels and names of individual assigned to serve on interview panels for the City Manager selection process be approved by the entire City Council. 

 

VOTE: 6-1 (Councilmember Whittum dissented)
