The City Council met in study session at City Hall in the West Conference Room, City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, California on February 26, 2008 at 5:00 p.m., with Vice Mayor Melinda Hamilton presiding.

Call to Order: 5:00 p.m.

 

Study Session Summary:  

City Manager Amy Chan opened the session with an overview of the purpose of the Session, focusing specifically on similar concerns for the safety of public officials at the local, state and national levels.  Chief Don Johnson and Captain Doug Moretto provided information to Council on the recent incident in Kirkwood, Missouri wherein five people were killed and two were injured by a gunman during a council meeting.   Captain Moretto provided information on building and meeting security measures that are now in place.  Chief Johnson suggested Council consider the temporary addition of a uniformed Public Safety Officer at council meetings, additional training for Council on safety and security, and the reading of a public statement of decorum at each council meeting. 

 

Council brainstormed additional ideas and asked related questions.   One public comment was received.
