During 2001-2, the Downtown Stakeholders Advisory Committee, working with City staff and consultants formulated a vision for Downtown Sunnyvale:
The vision recognizes that Sunnyvale has the opportunity to develop a downtown like those which florished in medium-sized American cities during the first half of the last century -- a place to shop, work, live, enjoy entertainment, and obtain services (including public services.) The vision also dictates that the scale should not be overpowering, but rather pedestrian friendly, warm and green. Here are some of the supporting elements which the Downtown Stakeholders Committee discussed in formulating its vision
An enhanced, traditional downtown serving the community with a variety of destinations in a pedestrian friendly environment.
Promote Sunnyvale’s downtown market niche as a community-oriented downtown with a "sub regional" market potential.
Provide a wide variety of uses within Sunnyvale’s downtown to enhance its role as a traditional full-service, mixed-use downtown.
Establish Sunnyvale’s downtown identity within boundaries formed by Mathilda, Sunnyvale, Evelyn and El Camino.
Introduce pedestrian connections, including a new connection through Town Center Mall, to link together the "separate projects" into a unified downtown.
Establish a hierarchy of tree-lined boulevards, avenues and streets that enhance pedestrian routes and create a pedestrian-friendly walking experience.
The Committee consists of 21 members representing Downtown residents, businesses, and developers.
