Downtown Redevelopment

The City of Sunnyvale has only one redevelopment project, the 184-acre Central Core Revelopment Project Area. The goal of the project is to rebuild Downtown Sunnyvale as a traditional downtown, a vibrant pedestrian-friendly central place for shopping, working, living and entertainment. The current focus is on the large block bounded by Mathilda, Washington, Sunnyvale and Iowa Avenues, commonly known as the Town Center Mall.

Historic Murphy Avenue Remodel is Underway

Sunnyvale’s Historic Murphy Avenue is currently closed to all vehicle traffic. The closure is expected to last until the end of March 2010. Pedestrians will still have access to the many shops and restaurants that line Murphy Avenue.

The closure is necessitated by construction of the Murphy Avenue streetscape and by underground utility repairs. The streetscape will improve sidewalks and streetlights, while the underground utility work will replace aging pipelines buried under the street. The project includes work on the following streets: Evelyn Avenue, between Frances Avenue and Sunnyvale Avenue; Murphy Avenue, between Evelyn Avenue and Washington Avenue; and Washington Avenue, between Frances Avenue and Sunnyvale Avenue.

The construction work throughout the project will begin in phases in order to minimize impacts on traffic and pedestrians. The first phase is already underway on Evelyn and is expected to continue into October. This phase includes improvements for underground utilities, street lights and sidewalks. While no vehicles will be allowed, pedestrian access will be maintained, even when work begins on replacing sidewalks.

Washington Avenue will remain open to two-way traffic throughout the construction period, but lane widths and turn lanes will be restricted.

Work is also planned for the public parking lot area between Murphy and Frances avenues. Notices and signs will be posted to direct the public to additional free public parking during this project.

Businesses in the downtown area will remain open during the project. Downtown Sunnyvale visitors and shoppers are encouraged to park in the new parking structure on the west side of Macy's. The entrance to three new levels of parking is from Taaffe Street, south of Washington Avenue.

Farmers' Market has temporarily relocated to the Caltrain Station ground-level parking lot. The Caltrain parking structure will be open and available for public use. Cost for all-day parking is $3 per vehicle.
