WHAT CAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DO FOR YOU?
ONLINE SERVICE FOR AVAILABLE COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES
Sunnyvale’s Economic Development Division is providing an online service that will assist companies in identifying available commercial properties in the City. Through a contract with LoopNet, Inc. companies searching for retail, industrial, office and other commercial properties can access information directly from the City of Sunnyvale Web site at www.sunnyvale.ca.gov. LoopNet is an online real estate marketing service, similar to the residential multiple listing service, that enables commercial real estate firms to showcase their available properties on the Internet.
Existing and potential businesses can access the site from the City of Sunnyvale Web site. Once you click on "Available Commercial Properties" you will be immediately connected to the property listings. The information can be sorted by properties for sale or lease, by type of property (industrial, retail, etc.), by square footage and/or by price. The listing includes businesses that are for sale.
This information can be accessed at www.sunnyvale.ca.gov.
If you have any questions on this new service, contact Economic Development at (408) 730-7607 or email econdev@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us.

Two-year Business License Renewal Process
The City of Sunnyvale is moving to a two year business license cycle starting in 2005. This change is a result of a budget reduction in Fiscal Year 2003/2004 to the staff hours in the Business Licensing activity. The City of Sunnyvale has approximately 7,000 business licenses that expire every year in December. Migrating to a two year licensing cycle will allow staff to maintain a high level of service by having 50% of the licenses expire in alternating years. The City is planning on administering this transition in the following manner:
In December 2004, all businesses in the City's business license database will receive a renewal form. In order to make a smooth transition to prevent against all licenses expiring at the same time, 50% of the licenses for 2005 will be issued for one year (expiring on December 31, 2005) and 50% of the licenses will be issued for a two-year term (expiring on December 31, 2006). In December 2005, the businesses with the one-year license would renew their license for a two-year term.
In addition, the City Council approved an increase to the renewal processing fee from $17.00 to $23.00. When Sunnyvale businesses migrate to the two-year renewal cycle, they will save $11.00 over the two-year term because businesses that paid $17.00 per year for the processing fee will now pay only $23.00 in processing fees for two years. For more information on this process, please call the Business License phone line at (408) 730-7620.

One Stop Permit Center 20th Anniversary
Sunnyvale was the first city in the U.S. to provide a centralized building permit center for customer convenience. Opened on October 29, 1984, the One Stop Permit Center put all departments and divisions related to building permits in one place so that customers could visit one location to take care of their business rather than go from office to office in City Hall or off-site locations obtaining the required approvals. It sounds like common sense now, but it was a radical departure from the way municipal permit business was conducted at the time. Some cities still have not centralized the permit process and residents in some communities are still forced to run from here to there and back again to obtain their permits.
As a result of the One-Stop Permit Center, Sunnyvale has earned an international reputation for streamlining the building permit process. We are able to issue more than 90% of all building permits at the counter the same day the customer submits the plans. Less than 10% of all permits issued are taken in for review and are reviewed within 21 days. State law requires review within 30 days.
Over the past twenty years, major improvements have been made to the One-Stop Permit Center, including increasing the number of permits issued over the counter and reducing the review time for projects that are submitted for review. However, the most significant is the establishment of the E-OneStop, and on-line version of the One Stop Permit Center. Using cutting edge technology, supported by the Information Technology Department, the E-OneStop was established in 1999 and offers a full range of building permit services completely on-line. Services available on-line are:
E-Permits: online forms for 17 different permits from replacement of a water heater to kitchen remodels, plus requirement information E-Histories: complete histories of all building permits and planning projects so that buyers can trace the “pedigree” of a property E-Inspection Scheduling: customer-set appointments for building inspections E-Plan Check Status and Comments: up-to-the-minute status of building plans submitted for review and comments from all departments/divisions reviewing the plans E-Zoning: information on zoning districts, flood zones, lot sizes and dwelling units.
We are constantly improving and expanding the services offered on-line and in person at the One Stop Permit Center. For more information or to provide and feedback, please contact Ali Fatapour, Chief Building Official, at (408) 730-7444 or afatapour@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us.
