SIGNS

There are requirements for both permanent and temporary signs in Sunnyvale.

TEMPORARY SIGNS

For all temporary signs such as banners or balloons, review the Temporary Signs handout.

PERMANENT SIGNS IN A SHOPPING CENTER OR MULTI-TENANT SPACE

  1. If your business is located in a shopping center or part of a multi-tenant property, you must follow the requirements of the Master Sign Program for the site. To obtain a copy of the Master Sign Program, go to the One-Stop Permit Center.  This Master Sign Program will detail the size and design requirements for wall and ground signs for your particular property.
  2. No planning permit is required when you comply with the Master Sign Program.
  3. You must obtain a building permit with the Building Division.

PERMANENT SIGNS IN A SHOPPING CENTER OR MULTI-TENANT SPACE

  1. If your business is not located in a shopping center or multi-tenant property, review the Signs handout for wall and ground sign requirements.
  2. A Miscellaneous Plan Permit is required for all permanent signs (not in a shopping center).  Submit two sets of applicable plans and a MPP Application signed by the property owner.
  3. Once the MPP has been approved you must obtain a building permit with the Building Division.
