There are requirements for both permanent and temporary signs in Sunnyvale.
TEMPORARY SIGNS
For all temporary signs such as banners or balloons, review the Temporary Signs handout.
PERMANENT SIGNS IN A SHOPPING CENTER OR MULTI-TENANT SPACE
- If your business is located in a shopping center or part of a multi-tenant property, you must follow the requirements of the Master Sign Program for the site. To obtain a copy of the Master Sign Program, go to the One-Stop Permit Center. This Master Sign Program will detail the size and design requirements for wall and ground signs for your particular property.
- No planning permit is required when you comply with the Master Sign Program.
- You must obtain a building permit with the Building Division.
PERMANENT SIGNS IN A SHOPPING CENTER OR MULTI-TENANT SPACE
- If your business is not located in a shopping center or multi-tenant property, review the Signs handout for wall and ground sign requirements.
- A Miscellaneous Plan Permit is required for all permanent signs (not in a shopping center). Submit two sets of applicable plans and a MPP Application signed by the property owner.
- Once the MPP has been approved you must obtain a building permit with the Building Division.
