ACCESSORY LIVING UNITS (GRANNY UNITS)

An accessory living unit (also known as granny flats, in-law quarters and secondary dwelling units) is a one-bedroom unit that provides independent living accommodations for one or more persons.

Here are the following steps you need to go through to get Planning Division approval for your accessory living unit.

  1. Review the Accessory Living Units handout.
  2. Get the Zoning District for your lot by going to E-Zoning or contacting a planner.
  3. Get the Single Family Zoning Requirements for that zoning district.
  4. To submit for a Miscellaneous Plan Permit, you need two sets of applicable plans and the MPP Permit Application Form.
  5. Once your MPP is approved, you need a permit with the Building Division.

Please call a planner to verify your project requirements.  The above is intended as a general guideline for accessory living units.
