RESIDENTIAL FENCES

To promote attractive and safe neighborhoods, Planning and Building permits may be required for new or replacement fences.

Here are the following steps you need to take to obtain approval for your fence.

  1. Review the Residential Fences handout for all relevant requirements.
  2. Ensure that the fence is not located within the corner and driveway vision triangles.  No fence higher than 3 ft. may extend into these areas.
  3. Submit for Planning review.  This will require: An MPP Application or a Use Permit Application, (as described in the Residential Fences handout) and two sets of applicable plans.  If the fence is between 6 and 7 ft. and between two properties, a Fence Agreement is required.
  4. Once the Planning review process is complete, you can obtain a building permit. See the Building Permit requirements for Fences for further information.
