Fundraising Events

Car washes can be a popular choice for fundraising, but did you know that the soap and water used to wash and rinse cars contain waste that can pollute our water resources?

To avoid flooding of parking lots and streets, Sunnyvale’s storm drains are designed to drain the excess water away. The storm drain system empties the water directly into our local creeks and San Francisco Bay without treatment. This is how car wash fundraising events can create a significant amount of water pollution without even realizing it. Discharges of polluted water into the storm drain collection system violate the requirements found in the Sunnyvale Municipal Code, Section 12.12.040 (k).
Don’t let your charitable event cause water pollution in our creeks and Bay! The City of Sunnyvale has a “Sudsafe” Car Wash Kit available for loan to non-profit organizations. Each kit contains an insert to block the storm drain and divert the polluted water. This brochure gives guidelines on car washing and details on how to borrow a  car wash kit.
