The Purchasing Division provides centralized procurement services for all goods and services to support City operations in accordance with the City Charter and the Sunnyvale Municipal Code. Purchasing assures a fair and open acquisition process that seeks to obtain maximum value for each dollar spent. Activities include soliciting formal competitive bids and proposals, obtaining informal quotes, and participating in cooperative procurements with other governmental agencies where appropriate.  Staff also provides assistance and training to City employees to ensure that they understand and comply with all legal requirements.

Staff in the Purchasing Division also maintains a centralized warehouse to allow employees to conveniently obtain commonly used supplies at a reduced cost due to volume discounts. Central Stores staff also disposes of surplus and obsolete equipment and provides centralized receiving for the City's Corporation Yard facility.

The Purchasing Division is proud to have received the National Purchasing Institute’s Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award annually since 2000.  This award is “designed to measure innovation, professionalism, productivity, e-procurement, and leadership attributes of the procurement function,"   and exemplifies  Purchasing staff's excellence in the public procurement field.
