2008 Branch Library Study

At the annual Study and Budget Issues workshop held in January 2008, Council requested the study of a branch library for Sunnyvale in a leased facility. This study will review all areas of Sunnyvale for potential lease space for a branch library. It is anticipated a report will be presented to Council in November 2008 for their consideration.

Summary of Recent Planning for Library Services

• The Library of the Future Study and Strategy planning document was completed in June 2007. The study made recommendations for Sunnyvale's library services through 2030, and included input from the community, staff, the Board of Library Trustees and architects. For more information about the process and results, visit the Library of the Future Web page.
• Based on the recommendations of the Library of the Future Study and Strategy, a ballot measure was placed on the November 2007 election ballot to fund construction of a new main Library. The measure - Measure B - received 59% support, however, a 2/3 majority was required to pass.
• A joint-use library with Columbia Middle School, as an example of a possible branch library, was considered as part of the study, which concluded that a branch should be no less than 16,000 s.f. to 24,000 s.f. and located in an area convenient to a large segment of the population.
