Death notices and obituaries from 1985 to the present may be searched for free in the San Jose Mercury News online archives. Full text is available for a small fee. NOTE: Sunnyvale Library users may get free access to online archives dating after 1985 inside the library.

For a fee, San Jose Mercury News research department can search for death notices & obituaries that were listed in the paper.

A local System Reference Center will search for and deliver death notices or obituaries published in the San Jose Mercury News or the San Francisco Chronicle. Requests originating out-of-state will cost $11.95 (whether or not the obituary or death notice is found.) California residents will not be charged if the request is sent through a public library as a regular reference question.
