Homework Tips for Parents
|
-
Utilize Brainfuse, free online homework assistance. Students in grades 4-12 can connect to a tutor for help in math, science, social studies and English. English-speaking and Spanish-speaking tutors are available daily from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
- Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.
Avoid places where phones, TV, and other people’s activities will be a distraction.
- Be sure your child has the required supplies, such as paper, pencils, ruler.
A dictionary and assignment book are very useful additions.
- Assist your child with time management.
Set a schedule that includes both a beginning and ending time. Avoid the hour or so just before bedtime when fatigue and frustration are more likely to set in.
- Confirm that your child understands the assignment directions and knows how to do the work required.
Having the child tell you about the assignment will reassure both of you that she knows what to do and is ready to begin.
- Stay informed about the subjects your child is being taught in school.
Talk with the teacher and make sure you know the purpose of the assignments. Ask about study skills as well as factual information.
- When your child asks for help, offer guidance, not answers.
Too much help teaches the child that he is not able to meet challenges and someone will always step in and do things for him.
- When the teacher asks you to participate in the assignment, do it.
When homework is meant to be done by the child alone, stay away. Children learn different skills when working with others and when working independently. Both can be of lifelong benefit.
- Relate homework skills to skills the child will use as an adult.
Let him see you reading, calculating, measuring, consulting maps, etc. Better yet, invite him to participate in these activities with you.
-
Demonstrate a positive attitude toward homework. Children pick up on both spoken and unspoken attitudes of parents.
-
Avoid implying that homework is something onerous, boring or a required waste of time. If your child is continually unhappy with homework assignments, talk it over with the teacher.
