This is one of the best job search guides on the Internet – and it focuses on finding a job in California! JobStar provides resources specific to geographic regions including San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento. Here you’ll find an impressive array of links for job ads, job fairs, career centers, and libraries in any of these geographic areas. Other features include résumé and cover letter writing tips, career training information, and links to more than 300 salary surveys.

NOVA is a federally funded employment and training center, administered by the City of Sunnyvale. This is a great site for beginning the Silicon Valley job hunt. They have a guide to job hunting in the area as well as links to current employment opportunities, occupational exploration, Bay Area job search resources, and job search Internet tools. You'll also find information here about NOVA's career counseling, self-assessment, and job search workshops.

Bay Area Careers - www.bayareacareers.com
This is a central repository or "meta-list" of links to individual employment sites within the greater Bay Area. The goal of the site is to connect employers directly with job seekers. Click on "Resources" to get a listing of Bay Area job search sites. It also allows you to click on a geographical region such as the South Bay and get a listing of companies which have job openings. Clicking on any of these company links will bring you directly to the job opening information.

A career management site, Monster.com provides access to résumé management, a personal job search agent, a careers network, and advice on job searching. It provides access to more than 200,000 job listings. You can browse jobs by country, company, or state. Or, you can click on a geographical region of interest and find a list of companies with current job opportunities. Click on the company name for the full list of openings.

Wall Street Journal – Careers - www.careerjournal.com
Search job ads by company name, industry, job function, or location. This is the "premier site for executive, managerial, and professional jobs." Updated twice weekly, it features positions like senior and general management, sales, marketing, finance, technology, and related fields. There are links to articles which give tips on job hunting, succeeding at your present position, and staying on top of industry trends. Other features include free salary information provided by SalaryExpert and a fee-based searchable database of national and international executive recruiters.

Search job ads by job type and city/state. Owned by Yahoo, Hot Jobs strives to connect job seekers and employers. Browse jobs by location, job type, or company. In addition to the regular job search page, you can choose to search for international jobs as well as entry-level/internship positions. Company profiles provide brief information about the company as well as links to their home pages. After completing the free registration, you can post and control access to your resume and create a profile so that job leads are e-mailed to you. After discovering a position of interest, you will be presented with options to apply.

Search job ads by region, area code, skill keywords, and job title. Specializing in Information Technology (IT) and IT-related fields, this site provides access to more than 85,000 job postings. Signing up for a free account will enable you to post your résumé online, access relocation tools, and create a profile so that employers can easily find you.

Net-Temps - www.net-temps.com
Search job ads by state/metro area, job type (contract or direct), and keyword. With more than 21,000 contract job listings and 16,000 direct job listings, this site is useful for those who seek contract positions. Since both recruiters and job seekers use the site, you may want to post your résumé for free. Job seekers who do post résumés will be able to see how often their résumé is reviewed by someone. The site also features a Job Search Agent which will allow you to set up a profile of the job you are looking for, and then will notify you when a new posting meets your requirements.

Search job listings from employer Web sites by location, job description keywords, and industry. FlipDog includes over 300,000 job listings found on employer Web sites. This site is the California Employment Development Department’s Job Openings Browse System. You must complete a free registration form to search the jobs listed here. If you find a job opening you would like to apply for, you can fill out a system-generated résumé. The site is also available in Spanish.

ABAG - www.abag.ca.gov
This is the Association of Bay Area Government’s site. Click on Jobs, and that will bring you GLOBE (Government Listing of Bay Area Employment). This is an Internet-based posting board for local government and special district job listings. You can download an application to apply for a position which you can then fill out and mail in.

Newspaper Classifieds

Careerbuilder - www.careerbuilder.com
Search newspaper classifieds and Web postings by job category, keywords, dates, and newspaper. Search Web postings by employer, location, job category, and keywords.  Founded by a partnership between the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, San Jose Mercury News, and the Washington Post, this site provides access to the classified sections of nearly 130 newspapers as well as Web postings. No job listed here will be more than 30 days old. Complete the free registration form to post your résumé. Clicking on "Company Profiles" will give some background information for a particularly company.

AJR Newslink - newslink.org
Newslink provides links to nearly 5,000 newspapers online. Sponsored by the American Journalism Review, this site also has a "Joblink" which contains job postings for journalists. Click on "Newspapers" to select a newspaper by geography. Once you find the home page for the newspaper, you can scan the site to see if the paper’s classified ads will be accessible through the Internet. You can also find many international newspapers here.

Compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the principal fact-finding agency of the federal government, one can access information such as the nature of an occupation, working conditions, employment, training and educational requirements, job outlook, earnings, related occupations, and sources for additional information.

California Labor Market Information - www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov
From the California Employment Development Department, this site is a terrific resource for up-to-date information on the rapidly changing labor market in Santa Clara county. One can find information on hours and earnings by industry, major employers by county, and occupational and career information. Click on "Occupational & Career Information" to access the California Occupational Guides, an invaluable resource for assessing employment trends, training and education requirements, and wages.

Salary.com - www.salary.com
Search for salary information by job category, zip code, or state/metro area. Here you'll find compensation data, advice from compensation analysts, information on negotiation tactics and news specific to the compensation marketplace. Links will be provided to related salary surveys, government data, trade publications, and trade associations for further information. The site obtains this data by using "more than one survey source" and applies its own formula to the figures. Since sources are not revealed, it would be wise to research additional sources of salary data.

Start by selecting a job title and entering a zip code or state and metropolitan area. Salary reports include information about the average total compensation, renter's buying power, and a graph of base salary vs. buying power. One can also search International salaries with this site.

O*NET is a unique, up-to-date occupational information and labor market research Web site.  One can use keywords to describe worker skills and attributes in order to locate occupations that might be suitable for the job seeker.  Occupational Information Network (O*NET) and O*NET OnLine were developed for the US Department of Labor by the National O*NET Consortium.

This is a fantastic site, providing access to thousands of volunteer opportunities. You can search by zip code, category, and date for those one-time or ongoing opportunities closest to you.
