Project Overview
By Spring 2010, the Library plans to install an automated materials handling system to provide patrons with better service. Each item in the Library's collection will be equipped with an RFID tag, allowing for quick and easy checkout and check-in. When materials are returned to the Library, your items will be checked in immediately and you will have the option of a printed receipt. When you checkout materials, you can simply place a short stack of items on the counter, and all of the materials will instantly be checked out to you.
Project Benefits
- Faster checkouts and therefore fewer lines and reduced wait time
- The ability to increase checkouts without adding additional staff
- Immediate check-in of returned materials, with a receipt if desirable
- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week sorting capability
- Reduction of staff manual processes and possible check-in errors
- Staff will be reallocated to provide direct customer service
- Faster and more accurate inventory management
- Reduced risk of repetitive motion injuries for staff
Project Schedule - Library Closures
In order to install the various components of the automated materials handling system, the Library will be closed to the public from Sunday, March 7 through Sunday, March 21, 2010. No materials will be due on the dates the Library is closed. We do apologize for any inconvenience the closures may cause. We appreciate your patience as we work to provide you with better service.
Project FAQs
How do the tags work?
The RFID tag allows the barcode number to be read without having to line up a scanner with the barcode. Tags can be read at any angle and with the item in any position. In addition, multiple tags can be read at the same time.
How will this improve library service?
Once the new equipment is installed, patrons and staff will be able to check items in and out without having to locate and line up the barcode. This will allow items to be checked in and out more quickly than with the current equipment. Also, the new equipment will be able to check out small stacks of items rather than requiring that items are checked out one at a time.
What do you mean by "new equipment"?
The Library will install new self-check machines and materials return equipment that will be able to read these RFID tags. Staff will show patrons how to use the new equipment to check out and return Library materials.
When will this happen?
RFID tagging will occur between September and December 2009. Preparations for our new self-check machines provided by the Friends of the Sunnyvale Library and additional equipment will require the Library to be closed Monday, November 9 through Wednesday, November 11, 2009. Installation of our new equipment will take place in February 2010. February closure dates are to be determined.
What about privacy concerns related to RFID technology?
Our goal is always to protect patron privacy. There is no information other than the barcode on the tags. The tags also cannot be read from a distance.
Will this new technology replace our staff members?
No, it will make checkout and check-in more efficient for both staff and patrons.
