Special Programs

Author Ron Hansen
Thursday, May 22, 7 p.m.
Ron Hansen is the author of the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Mariette in Ecstasy, Atticus and other popular novels. He received an Award in Literature from the American Academy and the Institute of Arts and Letters. He taught fiction and screenwriting at Stanford, Cornell and other universities. Hansen is currently the Gerard Manley Hopkins S.J Professor in the English Department at Santa Clara University. He will speak about Exiles, his newest work to be published in May 2008, and his other writings at this event.

Ballot Propositions and Candidates Forum
Wednesday, May 7, 7 p.m.
Get objective, nonpartisan explorations of the statewide propositions under consideration in the June 3, 2008 Statewide Direct Primary Election when the Cupertino-Sunnyvale chapter of the League of Women Voters presents a free program describing the propositions and answering your questions. Also, hear from candidates for the Santa Clara County Supervisor's District 3 Office. 

Community Forum on a Branch Library
Thursday, May 29, 6:30 p.m.
At their budget and study session in January 2008, Council voted to study the question: Should the City of Sunnyvale operate a branch library? And if so, where should it be located? Learn about the branch library question and discuss with others in this community forum.

Future Business Leaders Showcase
Monday, May 19, 5 p.m.
Homestead High School Future Business Leaders of America members will present their nationally-recognized annual projects. Current projects range from restoring a local park, partnering with a Chinese import business, assisting middle school students, and analyzing the health care industry. The program will inform and inspire adults, teens and older children.

Mirrors and Windows: Reflecting Our Heritage and Opening Up to New Cultural Horizons
Thursday, May 8, 7 p.m.
Dr. Clara M. Chu, Associate Professor at the UCLA Department of Information Studies, and an affiliated faculty member at the UCLA Department of Asian American Studies, will discuss retaining your own heritage while learning to appreciate other cultures, being an American, and interacting within a mult-ethnic community. Refreshments will be served.

NASA's Phoenix/Messenger Update
Tuesday, June 10, 7 p.m.
Eric Norris, NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador, will present the latest information on NASA's Phoenix Mission to Mars and Messenger's recent flyby of Mercury, along with new information on other NASA interplanetary explorers. Eric's multimedia presentations at the Library have always been a big draw and you won't want to miss this one!

Origami Workshop
Thursday, June 5, 7 p.m.
Learn about the fun of modular origami with Meenakshi Mukerji, author of Marvelous Modular Origami. At this workshop for adults and teens, you will learn how to create a three-dimensional geometric shape using only one folding pattern. Folding experience will be helpful. Examples may be seen at www.origamee.net. Meenakshi Mukerji received the 2005 Florence Temko Award by Origami USA for her contributions to origami. A few books will be available for sale and signing by the author. Class size is limited, so please call (408) 730-7300 to register.

Summer Reading Program for Adults
Sunday, June 1 - Sunday, August 31
The Library invites you to join our annual Adult Summer Reading Program, Book a Great Summer. To participate, you must be 16 years or older (younger readers should sign up for the Teen or Kids Summer Reading Programs). You must have a current Sunnyvale Public Library card and must have read at least one book at the time you sign up. Sign-ups begin Sunday, June 1, and will end on Friday, August 1. Books can be fiction or nonfiction and in any language. Unabridged recorded books also qualify. The books you read are recorded in a log that you will receive when you sign up. After the first eight books are read, you will receive a free paperback book as your prize. The last day to record titles is Sunday, August 31. Join us at the Library and "Book a Great Summer!"

Sunnyvale Art Club Exhibition

The work of over 30 artists will be on display in a variety of media including oils, acrylics, watercolors and mixed media. The event is free and everyone is welcome.

Find the information you want in minutes. Learn effective search techniques, discuss search engines and indexes and discover great places to start your search.

The following classes are available by request to groups of five or more.  

Using the Library Catalog
Learn about the most powerful tool in the library – the online catalog. This hands-on course demonstrates how to use the catalog to search for books, videos, music, and other materials in the library and check their availability. Also discover how to use advanced catalog options such as renewing materials online, viewing the items you currently have checked out, accessing the catalog from home, and more.

Quick Answers at the Library
Where can you go to find answers to your medical, legal, consumer, and travel questions? Find out how the library can help in this overview of some of the library's most useful resources, as well as valuable databases and Web sites.
