Bank Basics
Wednesday, August 19, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Bank on Basics is a basic financial education class offered through United Way, Silicon Valley. Jim Dale, a Financial Stability Program Manager with the Bank of San Jose and United Way, will be the instructor. This class will focus on the following topics: What are 'second chance' bank accounts? What's a credit union? Are banks and credit unions safe? How can I use a bank to improve my credit score?

A Conversation with Gwendolyn Smith, Master of Social Work (MSW): Becoming Your Own Advocate
Wednesday, August 5, 7 p.m.
Gwendolyn Smith will discuss, in a broad context, becoming your own advocate in areas like health care, special education/children with special needs, child support, and mental health. She will the questions: What does it mean to advocate for myself? Why is this skill important? How do I advocate for myself? When do I advocate for myself? What if I am uncomfortable with advocating for myself, where can I go to seek help? How do I locate resources in the community?

An Evening with Opera San Jose
Monday, July 27, 7 p.m.
Opera San Jose artists will perform selections from the upcoming 2009-2010 season which includes Manon, Cinderella (La Cenerentola), The Marriage of Figaro and La Rondine. The artists performing at this special event include Rebecca Schuessler (soprano), Betany Coffland (mezzo-soprano), Alexander Boyer (tenor), Daniel Cili (baritone) and Silas Elash (bass).


The Kepler Mission and NASA Updates
Tuesday, July 7, 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador Eric Norris gives another of his popular multi-media presentations on NASA missions. Eric will discuss the Hubble Servicing mission, Kepler mission to find other Earths as well as update us on the Mars Rover, Dawn and other exciting missions to the solar system and beyond.

We've Only Just Begun is a special program series presented by experts on health and wellness, personal finance and science and technology. The following programs are supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Library Services and Technology Act through the California State Library.

Saturday, July 25, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Monique Smith Lee of the California Bat Conservation Fund will discuss the myths and misconceptions about bats, along with their natural history and how we can help them. There will be an opportunity to meet some live native bats.


Forensic Facts, a Real Life Story
Monday, July 20, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Crime scene investigator Bruce Dudley will describe what is possible with forensic science, separating myth from reality. He will include an example of a Sunnyvale case where forensic techniques really made a difference.

Demi Yezgi, a community leader, fundraiser and award-winning social entrepreneur, will discuss proven strategies to make your efforts to raise money successful and joyful. Learn the fundamentals of grassroots fundraising, the psychology of giving and specifc resources to empower your passion.


Top Tourist Sights of the Solar System: Where Bill Gates' Great-Granddaughter Will Go On Her Honeymoon
Thursday, July 9, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Using spectacular images from space probes and the world's largest telescopes, astronomer and popular lecturer, Andrew Fraknoi, will present the most intriguing future tourist destinations among the planets and moons in our cosmic neighborhood. No background in science is required for this non-technical presentation. Among the stops will be the 4,000 mile lava channel on Venus, the towering Mount Olympus volcano on Mars, the tallest "lover's leap" in the solar system - the awesome Verona Cliffs on the moon Miranda - and the mysterious ice-cracks on the moon Europa. Value Line Online: Personal Investment Basics
Tuesday, July 28, 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Value Line is one of the most trusted and prestigious names in the investment field. As a Sunnyvale Library cardholder, you have access to a great online tool - in the library and remotely - to help you with your personal investment strategies. The class will explore the various online tools available through the Value Line database. You'll learn how to use the Value Line Investment Survey, as well as other useful instruction on investing using this resource. This class is geared towards people who are new to - or have never used - Value Line. Feel free to bring your laptops to follow along!

Using the Library Catalog
Learn about the most powerful tool in the library – the online catalog. This hands-on course demonstrates how to use the catalog to search for books, videos, music, and other materials in the library and check their availability. Also discover how to use advanced catalog options such as renewing materials online, viewing the items you currently have checked out, accessing the catalog from home, and more.

Where can you go to find answers to your medical, legal, consumer, and travel questions? Find out how the library can help in this overview of some of the library's most useful resources, as well as valuable databases and Web sites.
