OFFICE OF THE CITY ATTORNEY

Welcome to the City Attorney's home page.  The goal of the City Attorney's Office is to provide professional, timely, and cost-effective legal advice on all matters involving municipal, state, and federal law affecting the City of Sunnyvale.

The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council and serves as the chief legal advisor to the City Council, Planning Commission, City Boards and Commissions, and all City Departments.  The City Attorney represents the City, its departments, and city employees in any litigation or administrative actions involving official city business.  The City Attorney's Office is responsible for writing legal documents, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other official legal documents.  It is also responsible for prosecuting any criminal violations of the Sunnyvale Municipal Code.

The City Attorney's Office includes the City Attorney, Senior Assistant City Attorney, two Assistant City Attorneys, a paralegal and administrative staff.

By law the City Attorney can only provide advice to the City Council, City Manager, and city departments on official City business.  The City Attorney cannot provide legal advice to an individual Sunnyvale resident or business on either City-related or private legal matters.
