As a resident of the City of Sunnyvale, you know that we take great pride in the quality of our award-winning parks, plentiful landscaping, clean neighborhoods and well-maintained public buildings.  To ensure that our neighborhoods remain attractive, the City has developed sign guidelines.  Sunnyvale Municipal Code Section 19.44.020 (46) relates to political signs.

DEFINITION

Political signs are those announcing, supporting, or opposing political candidates or measures in connection with any national, state, or local election.

SIZE

Political signs shall not exceed sixteen square feet per sign face.  The total sign area shall not exceed thirty-two square feet per parcel of real property.  The height of the erected sign shall not exceed ten feet from the ground.  No more than 25 percent of a window area may be covered with signage.

DURATION OF PLACEMENT

Political signs shall not be displayed at any location earlier than 90 days prior to an election and must be retrieved within 10 days after the election.  For the 2007 General Municipal Election, political signs may only be displayed beginning Wednesday, August 8, 2007 and must be removed by Friday, November 16, 2007

LOCATION

Political signs shall not be placed on public property such as utility poles or public buildings.  Signs may be placed on front lawns of private properties after obtaining permission from the property owner.

Statement of Information Form

The Sunnyvale Municipal Code requires that no person, other than an owner or person in lawful possession of real property shall erect a political sign on real property without first providing information as required in Section 19.44.020 (47) (d) which is attached.  The Statement of Information form is provided for your use for this notification.

Abatement of Political Signs Form

Candidates are asked to submit the Abatement of Political Signs form so we may be able to contact the person in your campaign responsible for sign placement in case there is a question about any of your political signs.
