The Columbia Neighborhood Center is looking for new members for the Community Advisory Committee.  This committee advises the Columbia Neighborhood Center administration and provides input on Columbia Neighborhood Center services.

BILINGUAL STORY TIME
Parents and children are invited to hear stories in English and Spanish at the Columbia Neighborhood Center every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.  Story Time is presented by a Librarian from the Sunnyvale Public Library, and includes songs, reading and games.  The children who participate can borrow books. CUENTOS BILINGUES

Invitamos a los padres y niños a oír cuentos en Inglés y en Español en el Columbia Neighborhood Center. Cuentos son cada Miercoles de 3:30 p.m. a 4:30 p.m.  La hora de cuentos, presentada por una Bibliotecaria de la Biblioteca de Sunnyvale, también incluirá canciones y juegos.  Los participantes podrán pedir 

libros prestados. ¡Los esperamos!  Se darán meriendas a los niños despues de los cuentos.

KARATE
Ongoing traditional Karate Classes are led by Chief Instructor Sensei Jay Castellano, 6th Degree Black Belt with assistance from Satsuma Dojo Black Belts.  Open to ages 8 years and up.

  • Tuesday Evening
    7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.   All Levels
  • Saturday Morning
    8:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m. Advanced Training
    10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Beginner/Intermediate

Fees for Sunnyvale residents or any student enrolled in school are $15.00 per month. Fees for all other interested individuals are $35.00 per month. Registration takes place during the first week of each month. Assistance with fees may be available, please contact the CNC at (408) 523-8150. Classes are held at the Columbia Neighborhood Center Gym at 785 Morse Ave, Sunnyvale, 94085.  Feel free to visit a class.

Clases contínuas de Karate Tradicional son enseñadas por el Instructor y Jefe Sensei Jay Castellano, Cinturón Negro de 6to Nivel, con la ayuda de los Cinturones Negros del Dojo Satsuma.  Abierto desde los 8 años de edad para arriba.

Community Advisory Committee (CAC)  Now accepting applications!

The Community Advisory Committee advises the Columbia Neighborhood Center administration and provides input (and expertise, if applicable) on the CNC's services by:

--Identifying community needs of the CNC service area;
--Helping to evaluate the effectiveness of CNC services in the 
   community,
--Serving as a resources in effectively operating, planning and
   advertising CNC services and;
--Assisting CNC staff with special projects

The CAC's members are chosen from the following categories:
1.  Students attending a CNC service area school (Bishop, Columbia, Fairwood, Fremont, Lakewood or San Miguel schools)
2.  Parents living in the CNC service area (North of Central Expressway and within Sunnyvale borders)
3.  Staff members of a CNC service area school,
4.  Members of businesses or organizations located in or serving Sunnyvale
5.  Residents of Sunnyvale, and
6.  Experts in areas related to the CNC's goals and services.

Note:  The CAC does not determine policy or direct staff regarding or related to the Columbia Neighborhood Center and its services)

Applications are being accepted now.  Application Deadline:  Friday, February 5, 2010.

Columbia Neighborhood Wellness Walks
Join community members every Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Columbia Middle School Track at 739 Morse Avenue in Sunnyvale.
Walk takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Strollers and pets welcome.

ESL: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
Classes in English as a Second Language are provided, by the Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult and Community Education. These classes are free to all adults who want to improve their English. GRUPO DE APOYO PARA MUJERES VICTIMAS DE ABUSO DOMESTICO
Offered in Spanish Only

La organización Support Network for Battered Women (Red de Apoyo para Mujeres Víctimas de Abuso Doméstico) ofrece grupos de apoyo solamente para mujeres de habla hispana y que sean víctimas de abuso doméstico.

El grupo se reúne los
Miércoles de 10:00 a.m. a 11:45 a.m.
en el Salón de Conferencias
del Columbia Neighborhood Center, 785 Morse Avenue, Sunnyvale.

La meta del grupo es de ayudar a familias de la comunidad latina afectadas por violencia doméstica. Se invita a las mujeres a que participen y reciban ayuda para aprender maneras de comunicarse mejor con sus familias, para que puedan expresarse y compartir sus preocupaciones y experiencias acerca de la violencia doméstica.
Todos los servicios son gratuitos y proveídos solamente en español por medio del Programa La Familia del Support Network.

The Support Network has a 24-hour toll-free bilingual (English & Spanish) crisis line available every day of the year. Counselors respond to calls from victims, friends and families, co-workers and neighbors. Callers are encouraged to seek immediate assistance from law enforcement or medical facilities, or to come for counseling. Depending upon the situation, they are given information about the dynamics of domestic violence, safety planning and our range of services.

FRIENDS FOR YOUTH MENTORING
Friends for Youth, a non-profit organization, matches trained adults mentors to youth in need of positive adult role models. The commitment for both parties is for one year, spending about 3-4 hours per week in various activities. For more information, call the Columbia Neighborhood Center at (408) 523-8150.

Friends for Youth, una organización sin fines de lucro, junta a mentores adultos con jóvenes que necesitan un modelo positivo de adulto en su vida.
