A neighborhood association is a group of residents who volunter their time to improve and enhance the area in which they live. Neighborhood associations help build a sense of community among neighbors, collectively address issues in the neighborhood, provide an effective communication link with government officials and other influential groups, and empower residents to work together to improve their neighborhood.

What is the Neighborhood Association Registry?

The Neighborhood Association Registry launched in January 2004.  The Registry creates a formal relationship between the City of Sunnyvale and its neighborhood associations. The Registry serves to strengthen neighborhood association support and facilitate clear communication between neighborhood community members and the City.

The Registry requires that Sunnyvale neighborhood associations complete a Registration Form and Information Sheet.  Contact Nathan Truitt at ntruitt@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us or (408) 730-7472 to request the materials.

Neighborhood associations receive the following City services:

  • Distribution to neighborhood association officers of community meeting notices, press releases and public hearing notices;
  • Placement on the official neighborhood association map;
  • Listing on the neighborhood association webpage;
  • Assistance in securing City and community speakers for meetings;
  • Arranging/coordinating meetings with City staff or elected officials on issues of importance to specific neighborhoods;
  • Assistance with neighborhood association activities, grant-writing, and general information and referral;
  • Opportunities for networking with other associations that support Sunnyvale neighborhood associations;
  • Information on how to start and maintain a neighborhood association.

Start a Neighborhood Association in Sunnyvale

There are many reasons why neighborhoods may want to organize, some of which are: to get to know your neighbors, to enhance the appearance of the neighborhood, to address a common concern, or to have a stronger voice in government. Generally, organizing your neighborhood will foster communication and interaction between neighbors and will help to boost neighborhood pride.
