Information and Referral for Youth and Families

From basic needs to emergency assistance, support groups to recreation, the following information is provided by the City of Sunnyvale to improve access to services for youth and families.

HelpSCC- Sponsored by the Community Technology Alliance, providing technology tools to link and network agencies in the region to more effectively deliver services to homeless and at risk populations.

Sunnyvale Library - Includes links to the Sunnyvale Resource Guide, a quick, consistent and comprehensive information tool to help serve the citizens of Sunnyvale, and eNeighborhood, a directory of local Web sites which organizes local information in order to meet the informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs of the community.

After-School Programs/
Arts, Recreation & Sports

Parks and Recreation  City of Sunnyvale's Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of activities for pre-school youth, elementary youth, teens, and adults.

Child Abuse/
Domestic Violence

Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence - Services for victims of abuse, their children, and even the abusers themselves. One on one counseling for adults and children, free drop in support groups for women, men, children, and teens, legal services, older battered women services, Batterer Intervention Programs, emergency shelter, transitional housing, and a 24 hour emergency hotline.

Support Network for Battered Women - Toll-free 24 hour crisis line giving information about domestic violence; counseling; and advocacy with police, the medical community and social services.
Casa SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) - A counseling intensive program which provides short-term residential crisis housing for adolescents 12-17. Family, group, and individual counseling is offered.
Asian Women's Home - Or call 408/975-2739.  Provides services that address unmet needs of Asian and Pacific Islander women and their children to live free of violence.

Child Care
City of Sunnyvale Child Care Resources- City provided resources for providers and seekers of child care, including the
Sunnyvale Family Child Care Network - A group of Sunnyvale child care providers who meet on a monthly basis to address the needs of family child care providers.
Foster/Adoptive Care
Family and Children's Services - Santa Clara County Social Services Agency.  Includes information for current and future foster care providers, as well as people in need of foster care.  Facilitates the placing of at risk youth in foster care.


Counseling
Columbia Neighborhood Center - A community center providing recreation, health and social services.
JFK Community Counseling Center - (408) 524-4900; Offers high-quality, affordable counseling to people of all ages through John F. Kennedy University.
Asian Americans for Community Involvement - Providing culturally and linguistically competent health services that target the needs of Asian and Pacific Islander children, adults and seniors.

Drugs and Alcohol
Alcoholics Anonymous - A fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
Al-Anon/Alateen - A fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope, in order to solve their common problems.

Education
Sunnyvale School District - Operates eight elementary schools, serving students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, and two middle schools, serving students in grades six, seven, and eight.
Cupertino Union School District - Serves 15,800 students in a 26-square mile area that includes the city of Cupertino and portions of five other cities in California's Silicon Valley.  Students attend twenty elementary schools and four middle schools.
Fremont Union High School District - Five high schools in the District: Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista.
Santa Clara Unified School District - Consists of twenty-three schools: 16 elementary, 3 middle, 2 high schools, and a continuation high school, plus the Educational Options Adult Education campus.
Cupertino Sunnyvale Adult & Community Education
- Classes on a variety of subjects for persons 16 years of age and over.
English as a Second Language:
Columbia Neighborhood Center - Classes are provided at the center by Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult and Community Education.

Adults:

NOVA - A federally funded employment and training agency, administered by the City of Sunnyvale.
State Employment Development Department - Job placement and referrals, unemployment insurance, disability insurance, employment and training, labor market information, payroll taxes, and more.
Santa Clara County Social Services - Assists residents in acquiring the resources needed to gain and retain competitive employment and to secure a more challenging, satisfying, and economically rewarding life for themselves and their children.

Youth:
NOVA Youth - Job listings (summer, full-time, part-time) and links to sites on colleges and career development for jobseekers between the ages of 14 and 24.

Food and Housing
Emergency Shelters:

Bill Wilson Center - Short-term housing for runaway, homeless, and other troubled youth (ages 11-17.)
Sunnyvale Community Services - A nonprofit, independent social service agency helping low-income families and seniors survive temporary financial problems.
Salvation Army - Financial assistance to families in need of food, clothing, rent, and utilities.
Food:
Our Daily Bread - A program based at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Sunnyvale, which provides a noonday meal three days/week to anyone who comes.
Second Harvest Food Bank - Rallying community resources to assist people who are hungry in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
Non-Emergency Shared Housing:
Catholic Charities - Assistance for single parents with one or two small children in finding affordable rooms to rent in people's homes.

Health Care and Wellness
Camino Medical Group - Community based, not for profit medical group providing coordinated high quality medical care in a group practice setting.
Columbia Neighborhood Center - Family medicine, pediatric and adolescent health care.
El Camino Hospital - A full-service, acute-care community hospital that offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services to the communities of Mountain View, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Sunnyvale, Cupertino and parts of Palo Alto and San Jose.
Lucille Packard Children's Hospital Health Van 11 - A pediatric health clinic on wheels providing FREE health services to children who do not have medical insurance or Medi-Cal. 
Rotacare Free Clinic - Offering FREE health care for adults and children who do not have insurance, Medi-Cal, or Medicare.  Please note NEW Mountain View clinic location: 2400 Grant Road, ground floor of the Park Pavilion (YMCA Building) on the El Camino Hospital Campus.
Insurance for Children:
Columbia Neighborhood Center - Offering information and assistance with low cost health insurance plans such as New Healthy Kids, Healthy Families, and Medi-Cal. 
Teen Pregnancy:
Planned Parenthood - Provides a range of reproductive and general health services.
Lucille Packard Children's Hospital Teen Health - Staffed by nurses, this resource line offers the latest information on health and wellness, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), eating disorders, body changes, and other health issues.
Suicide Prevention:
Morrison Project - An early intervention school-based program sponsored by Santa Clara County Suicide and Crisis Services that helps teenagers develop healthy coping strategies and provides additional resources for help in times of need.
Suicide & Crisis Services of Santa Clara County - Providing confidential emotional support and crisis intervention to persons in life-threatening situations and to educate the community about suicide and suicide prevention.

Help Lines/Information & Referral
Council on Aging (COA) of Silicon Valley - Designated by the State Department on Aging to serve and represent Santa Clara County, the COA works in conjunction with local health and related community agencies to develop, coordinate, and fund a wide range of services for Santa Clara County Seniors age 60+.
Parent Information and Referral Center - A free community service provided by Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.  Pediatric nurses are ready to answer your questions about topics such as children's health, growth and development, safety, and behavior.
Santa Clara County Hotlines and Help Services - Local and National resources for teens in crisis, including information for kids home alone, suicide prevention, and runaways.
United Way 211 - Trained information and referral specialists with information on more than 600 community agencies.

Hospice Care
Pathways Hospice - A community-based nonprofit  organization providing in-home healthcare.

Legal Assistance/Mediation/Conflict Management
Project Sentinel - Provides information and counseling, resource referrals, mediation, and conciliation, including landlord/tenant disputes.
Restorative Justice Program - Part of Santa Clara County's Action Plan.  Partnering with the community to create safer neighborhoods and engage their participation in holding offenders accountable.  Call 1/800-200-9775. 

Library 
Sunnyvale Library - Includes online renewal service; programs for children, adults, and teens; Bookmobile; and the Sc[i]3 Patent and Trademark Library.

Literacy
Cupertino Sunnyvale Adult & Community Education - Adult literacy program, ATLAS, includes links to reading activities on the web.
Vision Literacy - Offered through the Santa Clara County libraries.  Provides innovative literacy services for adults, empowering them to reach their goals and potential.

Parenting
Las Madres Neighborhood Playgroups - Providing a network of neighborhood playgroups in Santa Clara County for those with children born in the same year.  Plus links to parenting resources on the web.

Public Safety
Gang Intervention/Prevention

Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County - Gang intervention and prevention services, targeted but not limited to Latino and Vietnamese young men and young women ages 13 to 18.
Friends for Youth - Dedicated to supporting youth in need through mentoring. Works to achieve its mission through the Mentoring Services and the Mentoring Institute.

Sunnyvale Neighborhood Associations
- The Neighborhood and Community Resources Division of the City of Sunnyvale supports community residents in forming, revitalizing or maintaining neighborhood associations.
Sunnyvale Neighborhoods Actively Prepare (SNAP) - An award-winning and proven program of residential emergency preparedness, organized to encourage direct citizen involvement, education about disasters and to improve community self-reliance.
Youth
National SAFE KIDS Campaign - A national non-profit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury.

Senior Services
Sunnyvale Senior Center - Activities and programs for adults age 50 and over.

Support Groups
Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) - Advancing the well being of young people and their families by providing services that promote resiliency and teach self-respect, responsibility and healthy social interaction.

Transportation
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) - Information on all VTA services including fares and schedules for bus, light rail, and shuttles. 
Caltrain - Schedules, fares, and other information.

Volunteer Opportunities
City of Sunnyvale Volunteer Resources- Includes listings of volunteer opportunities for youth and adults in various City departments.
