What is the Cultural Diversity Advisory Committee and what is its purpose?

Like all of California, the population of Sunnyvale has become increasingly diverse.  The 2005 U.S. Census Update for Santa Clara County reports that Sunnyvale’s demographic profile is 42 percent white, 27 percent Asian, 17 percent Hispanic/Latino, 2 percent Black/African American, and 2 percent other race. Council has made a priority of exploring ways to improve the City's communications with, and outreach to, all Sunnyvale community members.  As part of this ongoing effort, this committee will advise staff on issues related to cultural diversity, review and make recommendations on City programs, activities and possible Study Issues.  The committee meets bi-monthly.

What are the responsibilities of the Cultural Diversity Advisory Committee?

This committee will make advisory recommendations to staff on City programs and activities related to cultural diversity issues as they pertain to ethnic heritage, race and/or religion.  Other matters affecting human rights or discrimination, such as:  gender, age, employment status, lifestyle, physical and/or emotional conditions will not be addressed.  Proposed responsibilities include but are not limited to advising staff on:

  • Ways to promote and collaborate with community groups to create diversity-related educational programs that increase cultural awareness and understanding;
  • Methods to ensure that residents of all cultures are welcome in Sunnyvale and have equal access to City services and programs;
  • Effective, creative strategies to encourage civic engagement of all community members;
  • Supporting staff efforts to build relationships with cultural groups and leaders in order to promote access to City services and community engagement;
  • Emerging cultural diversity issues and community needs;
  • Cultural diversity-related Study Issues for City Council consideration.
