:: How Recreation Helps
 Dear Sunnyvale Resident,

Summer is over, but not all of the classes and activities the Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Department have to offer! In a diverse city of approximately 137,538, parks and recreation programs, services and facilities play a vital role in creating an active and healthy community with a positive quality of life.

The Sunnyvale Department of Parks and Recreation is proud of the role we play in the Sunnyvale community. Public parks and recreation programs have the power to enrich the quality of life for persons of all ages and ability levels. Sunnyvale's scenic parks provide spaces for families and friends to spend time together, play together, and compete in sports activities. The parks also serve as sanctuaries for relaxation, the preservation and enjoyment of nature, and play an important role in defining our city, our neighborhoods and the individuals who live and work throughout Sunnyvale.

The City's Recreation Division is here to provide you, your family and your co-workers a safe place to get active, to learn new skills and to enjoy recreational activities with family and friends. Our programs are affordable and are conducted in clean, comfortable environments at a variety of times to fit your busy lifestyle. Activities and classes for children are also offered at school sites and parks throughout the community.

The purpose of our recreation newsletter is to give you, our readers and customers, a quick overview of what is new and to peak your curiosity to find out more about upcoming activities and programs. I hope that you enjoy what you see.

For more information about program offerings, park locations and amenities check out the Sunnyvale website www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/recreation call our office, 408-730-7350, or stop by any City facility to pick up a park map.

Evening of Cultural Arts Concert Series

Arts and Theatre

Sourdough Slim
November 29, 2008
Sourdough Slim is a veritable "one-man Western extravaganza," crooning Western classics, playing accordion, harmonica and guitar, dancing a jig, twirling a lariat and letting loose with award-winning yippee-ti-yi-yodeling.

Kugelplex
December 13, 2008
Kugelplex lights up the holidays with something decidedly different from the candy cane music of season. This well-respected young band follows in the footsteps of itinerate Yiddish musicians, or klezmers, who wandered Eastern Europe's cities and countryside, playing dance music for weddings and festivals. Their repertoire is rooted in the Old World, but the group offers plenty of modern surprises, too.

How Recreation Helps

According to the California Parks and Recreation Society, social bonds are improved when families play together and when seniors and individuals with disabilities are actively engaged in recreation activities. Recreation and park facilities help promote social bonds by uniting families, encouraging cultural sensitivity, and supporting seniors and individuals with disabilities. Recreation provides us with family and community bonds that last a lifetime.

Resident Discount for Active Duty Military and their Families

The City of Sunnyvale recently approved a policy to grant all active duty military and their immediate families' resident rates and reservation advantages for recreation activities, programs and services. Given the sacrifice active military and their families make to the safety and security of our community, the City believes the discount is its way of honoring the contributions of active duty service men and women.

This benefit is available only to active military members and their dependents. If you would like to find out how to apply to receive this benefit and to participate in City of Sunnyvale recreation classes and programs or to reserve Sunnyvale public facilities, please bring your military identification card to the Sunnyvale Community Center at 550 East Remington Drive or you can call the Sunnyvale Community Center at (408) 730 - 7341 for more information.
