Baguette Quartette
An Evening in Paris
January 12, 2008
Picture yourself in a Parisian café, circa 1940, soaking up the music and ambiance of the Baguette Quartette. Accordionist and music scholar Odile Lavault leads this period band in re-creating popular French songs of the decades between World Wars. Musette, an amalgamation of French folk music and Gypsy swing which flourished in rough-and-tumble Paris dance halls, is the group’s specialty. Their repertoire includes foxtrots, paso dobles, tangos, mazurka-like javas and “realistic songs,” sentimental ballads depicting the life of a tragic heroine.
