View From the Bay

Thur, 7/23/09, 11:15am – 5:15pm, $74

View From The Bay

Take your relationship with TV to the next level and become part of the live audience for ABC 7’s View from the Bay news magazine show. We don’t know what segments they’ll be featuring when we visit, but with an average of 7 or 8 per show, there’s bound to be something of interest for everyone! We’ll start our day with lunch at Buca di Beppo’s Italian Restaurant before going to the TV station. Don’t forget to set your VCR or TIVO to capture your television debut! Note: we can only take 24 people on this tour. If more are interested we’ll plan a second trip for a different day.

King Tut and the
Golden Age of the Pharaohs

Tue, 7/28/09, 8:30am – 3:00pm, $66

King Tut

Vicariously enjoy the thrill of discovery as you view “Opening Tutankhamun’s Tomb,” a photo essay that accompanies this new Tut exhibit at the de Young. The exhibit includes 50 burial objects from Tut’s tomb, as well as 80 other magnificent works of art from his royal predecessors, his family, and court officials. Most of the collection has never before been seen in the United States. After spending the morning with the Boy King, you’ll be on your own for lunch; bring a brown bag lunch or purchase one in the museum’s restaurant. You’ll have time to visit any of the other exhibits at the de Young or shop for your own regal treasures at the gift shop before heading home.

Roaring Camp Train &
Musical Saw Festival

Sun, 8/9/09, 9:00am – 5:00pm,
$77, Kids $70; an intergenerational trip!

Roaring Camp Train

Today, it’s off to the famous Roaring Camp in Felton, nestled in the picturesque Santa Cruz Mountains. Their big trees were spared the woodman’s axe, and are the first virgin stand of coastal redwoods to be protected from logging. We’ll take a narrated loop ride on the Roaring Camp Train then we’ll partake in a BBQ lunch. After lunch, we’ll be entertained by the “Mountain Men”—trappers and traders recreating a 1830s encampment you can walk through. Also, musicians from around the world will be playing on musical saws and folk instruments for our enjoyment. There is also a duck feeding area, a general store, a blacksmith who sells his wares, and across the street is Henry Cowell State Park where you could walk on a flat 1-mile loop trail through the redwoods.

“My Fair Lady” is in Town

Fri, 8/21/09, 4:45pm – 11:30pm, $110

We’ll begin our evening with a four-course dinner at Delancey Street Restaurant. Then we’re off to the Yerba Buena Theatre for one of America’s most beloved musicals “My Fair Lady,” performed by the Lamplighters with their signature flair. George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion rivals the wit and sting of W. S. Gilbert in telling the story of the transformation of a cockney “guttersnipe” into an upper class lady accepted in the best of society. It’s all in the accent and the clothes. Remember the songs from this Broadway classic; I Could Have Danced All Night, Wouldn’t it be Loverly, On the Street Where You Live and I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face? Special guest Geoff Hoyle appears as the incorrigible Alfred P. Doolittle.

The Cliff House, Flowers
And History

Tue, 8/25/09, 9:00am – 4:00pm, $91

This trip has something for everyone! The day begins with a visit to San Francisco’s Conservatory of Flowers. In addition to the indoor displays, the dahlias in the outdoor gardens promise to be a blaze of color. Then, we’ll travel to the Cliff House for a splendid lunch overlooking the Pacific. We’ll include enough time to visit the Cliff House gift shop before traveling on to our next stop, the Presidio, where a park ranger will come aboard our bus to give us a driving tour of this important military post with a fascinating past before we head home.

Sausalito Art Festival – 2009

Sat, 9/5/09, 8:45am – 3:45pm, $53

It’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping and there’s no finer place to find unique treasures than the Sausalito Art Festival. With over 250 world-class artists presenting more than 20,000 original works of art, this is a shoppers’ paradise. Additionally, there’ll be top-name entertainment on three stages, a magnificent sculpture garden, and gourmet food—all in an idyllic waterfront setting. Your day is your own from the time we drop you off at the main gate until you board the bus to return home with your very special purchases!

Wicked

Wed, 9/9/09, 12:30pm – 6:15pm, $113

The most talked about musical in years is being held over in San Francisco and we’ve got tickets! Wicked is the back story to the Wizard of Oz, a tale of two unlikely friends, one outwardly beautiful, and one… well, green. Based on the book by Gregory Maguire, this play works on many levels to dazzle and entertain with fantastic sets and phenomenal performances. Leave the driving to us and just sit back and be transported to another world—one inhabited by witches and flying monkeys.

Santa Cruz Follies – 2009

Thur, 9/17/09, 9:45am – 4:15pm, $82

“From the circus to a cabaret—all the way to the Broadway stage! Let us entertain you!” That’s the motto and the promise of this year’s SCO (Senior Citizens’ Opportunities) musical production, “That’s Entertainment!” Enjoy singing, dancing, and a touch of humor, all set to familiar music we all know and love. But first, we’ll stop for an early lunch at the Cocoanut Grove. Don’t miss this opportunity to be amazed and delighted by what folks our age can do—and do very, very, well!

Angel Island

Thur, 10/1/09, 8:15am – 5:00pm, $101

Take a short ferry ride to one of California’s most fascinating state parks. We’ll arrive on the island and have an early hot lunch. Then we’ll have a 2½-hour tour that includes the island perimeter tram tour and a tour of the recently refurbished immigration station. Docents will tell the long and interesting history of this island, including its use as an immigration/detention center for Chinese immigrants and its longer history as hunting and fishing grounds for the Miwok Indians. After the tour, you’ll have about an hour to check out the Visitors’ Center or visit the gift shop before catching the return ferry.

Ca’Toga & Old Faithful California

Sat, 10/3/09, 8:00am – 6:00pm, $110

Travel to Calistoga with us and tour Villa Ca’Toga, a magnificent example of Palladian-style architecture built by Italian-born artist Carlo Marchiori. The building is a grand work of art in itself, and is filled with fascinating artifacts and many whimsical “trompe l’oeil” (fool-the-eye) frescoes. For example, one room is painted so you get the impression you are inside a birdcage with a cat looking in. (Note: there is no elevator to the 2nd floor, so you must be able to climb stairs!) After lunch at Brannan’s Grill, you have your choice of afternoon activities. Stay in town to shop and/or visit the Sharpsteen Museum or take a short bus ride to “Old Faithful Geyser California.” You can stroll the grounds (flat but gravelly) and visit a small petting zoo while you wait for the next eruption. With eruptions every 30 minutes or so, you won’t have to wait long!
