             9-1-1 Guidelines

9-1-1 is for Emergencies

(Alternate Emergency # 408-736-6244)

Emergencies include crimes that are in progress or about to happen, or that have resulted in serious personal injury, property damage, or property loss, medical emergencies that require immediate response from trained medical personnel, and any reports of fire or smoke.  By calling 9-1-1, (or 408-736-6244) you will be linked to the appropriate police as well as fire fighting, medical, and ambulance services.

When you call 9-1-1 for an emergency, it is important that you remain calm and be prepared to answer the dispatcher’s questions.  The “WHERE,” “WHAT,” “WHO,” “WHEN” and “WEAPONS” of the situation you are reporting are extremely important.  Sometimes it may seem the questions are unnecessary, or may not make sense to you, but there are good reasons why they are asked.  Patience will help us process your call and get appropriate help to you as quickly as possible.  Remember, we must be able to approach the situation with your safety, as well as the safety of the responding officers, being utmost priority.

Non-Emergency Situations

Obviously, there are many other situations that require police response, but they may not warrant 9-1-1 calls.  Direct dialing a 7-digit telephone number for non-emergency situations will ensure police response without overloading the 9-1-1 system.  This non-emergency number is 408-730-7180.
