HUMANE TRAPS

The City of Sunnyvale Animal Control Unit has humane traps available for Sunnyvale residents and businesses to borrow for the purpose of trapping feral or nuisance cats.  The traps are available to use for 10 days, free of charge on a first come, first serve basis.  Please note: These traps cannot be loaned for the purpose of trapping healthy wildlife (see Living with Local Wildlife for more information).

HOW DOES A HUMANE TRAP WORK?
A humane trap is a cage with a door on one end which can be lifted up and set in place with a small catch. The door is connected to a flat metal trip plate on the bottom of the trap. The trap is baited by placing a small plate of smelly food at the back of the trap, past the trip plate. When an animal enters the trap, the weight of its paw on the trip plate triggers the door to swing shut behind it.

TO REQUEST A TRAP:
-If you live in Sunnyvale, call our Animal Control Unit at (408) 730-7178.
-Be prepared to leave your name, number, address and availability to meet with an officer.
-An officer will contact you as soon as a trap is available.

*If you would prefer to buy a humane trap of your own, contact the Animal Control Unit for additional information.
