Fire and Police Alarms Ordinance

The City of Sunnyvale has a False Alarm Ordinance. The ordinance is intended to raise awareness concerning the serious issues related to false alarms and reduce the number of false alarm activations.

The ordainance regulates the duties of alarm users and alarm companies, requires alarm system standards and charges fees for excessive false alarms.  For additional information about the Alarm Ordainance, or to obtain a copy, contact the Crime Prevention Unit at 408-730-7140.

  • If more than 2 false alarms at the same address are received by Public Safety in any 12 month period, fees will be assessed: a $150 fee is imposed for the 3rd through 5th false alarm, $225 for the 6th through 10th false alarm and $500 for any subsequent false alarms.
  • If more than 10 false alarms are generated in any 12 month period at the same address, the alarm system may be declared a nuisance alarm:
  1. It is unlawful to operate an alarm system which has been declared a nuisance.
  2. Business and residences given nuisance status will be required to attend a false alarm hearing and submit a written corrective action plan.
