Bicycle Safety Checklist

Make sure your childs bike "fits" and is adjusted properly. Check that all the parts are secure and working properly, and safety equipment is in place.

  • Bicycles should display side reflectors on the wheels and frame as well as both front and reflectors.
  • Handlebars should be securely in place and turn easily.
  • Wheels should be straight, securely fastened at the axel bolts/skewers and free from loose or broken spokes.
  • Tires should be inflated properly, free from cracks and bulges and show ample tread.
  • A U-lock or beefy cable lock should be carried and used to secure both the front wheel and frame to a secure stationary object or bike rack.
  • Record the serial numbers of bikes and keep them with the sales receipt and a photograph of the bike.  Mark the bike with your drivers license (use a CA prefix ) using an engraver to help deter theft and aid in recovery.
  • Register bikes at the nearest Sunnyvale Fire Station.
