Mission
The mission of the Solid Waste Division is to reduce the amount of refuse disposed and to provide reliable, competitively-priced, and environmentally sound services for waste reduction, recycling, and solid waste collection and disposal.
Goals
State law required that California cities divert 50 percent of their waste from landfill disposal by the year 2000. Sunnyvale met that 50 percent goal in 1996, and is now working to maintain or exceed its current 63 percent diversion rate.
An important component of the City’s diversion effort is the Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer (SMaRT®) Station and Drop-off Center where recyclables and yard trimmings are sorted, processed and marketed. The SMaRT Station contractor hauls the remaining garbage to Kirby Canyon Landfill in San Jose for disposal.
